  • 1.  Software for running music tracks

    Posted 03-06-2025 10:40

    Hello -

I am doing my first musical at the middle school where I teach.  I'm wondering what software programs are good to run music tracks from for chromebooks.  I've been recommended Soundtrap and Audacity.  Does anyone have any thoughts on these two or any other suggestions.  Our sound will be run by my students, so it needs to be relatively easy to use and effective.

I've used Audacity with my Cinema to Film Theater class-since that was the software on the school laptops before I swapped us to Adobe products--it works well.  I also know that Media Player should also be on Chromes as well and works with the Musical soundtracks.

I know I have a student who created the playlist with the Media player and it ran smoothly in Dec with Seussical

I'm not familiar with Soundtracks.  I can tell you that Audacity would be a bad choice. It is audio editing software, but not set up for playing back finished tracks.  Most of the track vendors have a piece of software for playback.  The generally require either Windows or QLab.  Some are very good.  Others not.  You are going to be hamstrug with the Chromebook requirement.  If at all possible, you need to get a computer running Windows or a Mac for the task.  If Mac, QLab is the industry standard for playback.  For Windows I recommend Multiplay.  Hope this is helpful.

I agree that using a Chromebook would be really difficult. We purchased SoundPlant, but they do have a free version to use, the free version is limited to .wav files only but you can get an idea of how it works. If you can run the sound from an iPhone or iPad, you should look into Go Button it also has a free version to start you off, you do need to know how files works on an apple product but once you have that knowledge and have it set up, it is as easy as just hitting the Go Button (even a caveman could do it)...
