I've decided to do two new plays, one drama and one comedy, that I found on New Play Exchange. Have been in touch with both playwrights and they are eager to be remotely involved with our process. I think this will be a fun and rewarding experience for my students - getting to have some interaction with the playwrights and work on pieces they can have an impact on. Royalties won't be paid until we're back in school but here are the planned titles:

Fall Drama: 'Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm?' by Katharine Vondy
Spring Comedy: 'Save Hamlet!' by Mark Harvey Levine

Fall Play:  Maskerade by Stephen Briggs--based on the book by Terry Pratchett
If you've read any of Terry Pratchett's books, you're probably a fan.  I've also done his Wyrd Sisters.  One of the benefits of this play is there are 26 characters. I will double cast some of them, but I will be able to have at least 20 actors involved in the show.  Good roles for women and men. Loosely based on Phantom of the Opera.

    Spring Musical:  Disaster

Currently, thinking about a one act cutting or adaptation of The Turn of the Screw based on the novel by Henry James and The Importance of Being Earnest in the fall.  Not sure about the spring as of yet-- Perhaps a week of student written or director written works in rep and we always try to finish the year with a spring musical, but I am no where near ready to make that decision.

Great topic.  It is very helpful to see other ideas and to hear about other programs!

We are doing Hound of the Baskervilles by Ken Ludwig in the fall and hoping to do an original play set in a nearby mansion where the audience moves from room to room to solve a mystery.

I'm doing Night of the Living Dead at Halloween. I've done it many times before at a variety of different schools and theaters and it's a huge engagement piece as well as a tremendous fundraiser. Only an hour and EVERYONE wants to come be a zombie.

In December I'm partnering with the culinary arts program and we are doing a dinner theater with Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberly.

In February we are doing the musical 9 to 5 which the kids are very excited about (I'm kind of surprised how excited they are actually.)

Then we are doing Fuddy Meers in our Little Theater

And our final spring show on the mainstage has yet to be determined. Probably a drama. Maybe The Crucible or Amadeus

We are doing Something Rotten in the spring, and, so the kids know what rotten is spoofing, we are doing Much Ado about Nothing in the fall.

I cant wait to hear all the other responses.  I am taking notes!

On the college level, this coming year I will be directing Best of Enemies. It is based on the bestselling book by Osha Gray Davidson, BEST OF ENEMIES is a true story about the relationship between C.P. Ellis, a Grand Cyclops of the KKK, and Ann Atwater, an African-American civil rights activist, during the desegregation of the Durham, North Carolina, schools in 1971. BEST OF ENEMIES exposes the poison of prejudice in the hearts of Atwater and Ellis who, by facing each other, are forced to face the worst, and best, in themselves. I am doing this show as a guest director for the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR.

In the spring we're workshopping an adaptation of Hattie Big Sky that I'm writing. In January we might be piloting a new musical. If not, I'm leaning toward PuffsShe Kills Monsters or The Search for Delicious.

For the Fall we are doing Men on Boats and our Winter musical will be either Head Over Heels or Urinetown. In the Spring we will do A Midsummer Night's Dream and also produce the 24 Hour Plays. Planning on producing a staged reading of the #Enough Plays too. A busy and exciting year for us.

We performed Puffs back in the spring!  It was lots of fun and the students really got a kick out of their ability to add their own touch of creativity to the parts.  I highly recommend it.

Fall musical- Middle school production of Newsies Jr
    Winter play- Radium Girls
Spring musical- Mamma Mia (Did not get approval for Chicago Teen). Disclaimer: I think I am the only one in the world who doesn't enjoy Mamma Mia, so I will have to get around that. My choreographer is excited though, and she is excellent, so will rely heavily :) Also, kids are super excited and I am charged with building a program, so I think this one will bring them in.

You are not alone—both my vocal director and myself can’t stand Mama Mia. Just can’t get over the book. Our kids are always begging to to it.

Fall play is "Just another High School Play" and I'm still trying to decide the Musical. It's my first year as full director (I'm a little nervous.)

I was thinking Godspell 2012 for the spring musical because it's small but can have as many in the ensemble as I want and I could pick and choose strong singers and strong actors and just use everyone where they shine.

I do however have two really reliable strong females, so I was also concidering Hello, Dolly!

We've had a really strong program, but this past couple of years have been hard.

    I'd love thoughts and advice!

This fall we are doing The Outsiders and we audition next week with the idea of  gender bent casting. This gender bent show idea has gained traction as this is our first week with students and I am pretty excited about the momentum at the start of the year.

Next semester our spring musical will be Chicago, Teen Edition. We are VERY excited about this one as well and students are seeing the bright school year ahead of them and coming in with smiles and giddiness at the season. I couldn't be more thrilled!

Break all the legs this school year!
