My high school students will open our season with Romeo and Juliet in the fall. I'm considering updating the time period, but want to do it meaningfully, not just to change the costumes. I want to be true to the text but want to consider if an update might be more appealing than the original setting. The Zefferelli movie strongly affects my vision.

This is a timeless piece which could be potentially set in any period, it is finding the conflict that you want to convey,  the conflict is 2 opposing families, could be based on politics, culture, gender, race, countries, religion or other differentiating factors.

Try to think outside the box, don't let the movie impose too much on your vision,  create a unique setting which you understand and can transfer the piece into, understand the period and its needs of the cast. This is a great love story which can transcend anytime in history.
