  • 1.  Secure but free (or very inexpensive) streaming? Vimeo or Youtube?

    Posted 03-23-2021 16:35
Any advice on Vimeo vs. Youtube unlisted link for secure and free/inexpensive streaming of a recorded (and edited) production?

We are not required to use any specific platform, but it is required (by Dramatic Publishing, and by our district IT policy) to be secure.  We also need to count views.

We are not charging for tickets, thus I would like to use a free (or almost free) platform.

I'd love to hear pros and cons of Vimeo and Youtube unlisted.  Or of any other free options that are secure, if there are any.  Our show is a little on the long side (over an hour), so that be relevant to anything that has a time limit/data limit/size limit.

Thanks in advance for any advice and info!

(For those of you who followed my agonized posts in August ... here's the update:  this year I am a fifth grade 'learning coach' - teaching a small class of fifth graders, fully in person, with lots of support from the 'real' fifth grade teachers.  It's been quite a year.  There are zero drama classes, but I couldn't let it be a year with no theatre (the poor 8th graders would have been totally gutted, as would I have been on their behalf).  So, we've done a remote show.  Getting approval to do it felt like a huge victory!  But I still am very excited to be 100% drama teacher again next year.)

When it comes to secure and cost-effective streaming options, both Vimeo and YouTube offer distinct advantages. Vimeo provides a range of privacy settings, allowing you to control who can access your videos. With password protection, domain-level privacy, and the ability to hide videos from Vimeo's public directory, you can ensure a secure streaming experience for your content. Vimeo also offers higher-quality video playback and customization options, making it suitable for professional use. However, it comes with a higher price tag for advanced features and storage.

On the other hand, YouTube provides a free platform for streaming with a massive user base. While it may not offer the same level of privacy controls as Vimeo, you can still set videos as unlisted or private to restrict access. YouTube's robust content delivery network ensures reliable streaming and broad audience reach. Additionally, YouTube's monetization options through advertising and the YouTube Partner Program can potentially generate revenue to offset costs.

Ultimately, the choice between Vimeo and YouTube depends on your specific needs. If privacy and customization are paramount, and you're willing to invest in a paid plan, Vimeo may be the better option. However, if you prioritize cost-effectiveness, broad audience reach, and potential monetization opportunities, YouTube's free platform can be an attractive choice. Consider your goals, budget, and desired level of control to make an informed decision.

Hi Guys, Both Vimeo and YouTube are popular video sharing platforms, but they cater to different needs. Vimeo is known for its focus on high-quality, artistic content and provides a more professional atmosphere. It offers advanced privacy settings, customization options, and fewer ads. On the other hand, YouTube is a vast platform with a wide variety of content, including user-generated videos, music, tutorials, and more. It has a larger user base and offers powerful search and discovery features. Ultimately, the choice depends on your specific requirements. If you prioritize artistic quality and a professional vibe, Vimeo might be your best bet. However, if you're looking for a broader range of content and a larger audience, YouTube is hard to beat.

YouTube is my choice because it is free and because the format allows me to add lesson plans or other notes in the "show more" section below the video. You can see how I used this on both  of my public curriculum channels-- no password required.  YouTube also allows me to create a playlist so the videos appear in a fixed order. On the drama and music curriculum, see scores and scenes from Mortgage Meltdown: The Musical   and the videos I curated to prepare the teachers and students who perform my work.

See   YouTube.com > "MortMelt Sampler"  playlist  and "MortMeltActorPrep" playlist

The "show  more" description on my has my curriculum notes and lesson plan ideas on some of my math videos for teachers.
See   YouTube.com > "OneDayMath Sampler"  playlist
