  • 1.  scrim material alternative

    Hello all,

    Is there an alternative material that may be less expensive to create scrim frames. I'm looking to create 4 4X8 panels to use as scrims.

    I would recommend reaching out to your local theatrical supplier and ask them if there are scraps available, usually these can be more affordable

    I have used a variety of subpar materials that still get the job done because I never can afford the scrim.  I've used natural scrim (https://www.onlinefabricstore.com/natural-cotton-scrim-fabric-.htm). It is very soft though and hard to pull perfectly tight, but I used it for a ship sail and was able to paint a compass on the front and rear project pretty well. I have also made curtains out of it to do a front light, back light ghost illusion. I am using it this year for a small round projection screen that I will paint like a clock face.  Then...last year, I needed black. Crazy find, but I found that this Better than Paper (https://www.amazon.com/Black-Better-Paper-Bulletin-Board/dp/B0792HCFTJ?th=1) worked surprisingly well for my black and white video rear projection and shadow puppet scenes.

    I am sure others will have better ideas, but way back in my college days for a summer stock season, we used tricot fabric to create a scrim-like effect. It isn't perfect, but worked enough. We used a black one that allowed enough light when back lit and was relatively solid when front lit.

    I have used stretched muslim and really any material that stretches enough that you can see light clearly through it can operate like a scrim,   Test several squares of cloth in front of a light and you will find one that works for you.  Really any translucent white cloth will work.  Just be sure its stretched tight.

    You can buy large rolls of cheesecloth in expensively and it works well.
