Looking to advise a talented student who is a strong MT performer plus visual artist. Location open: does not want to incur huge student debt. I know alums have their favorites. Some have theories about  conservatory training. CSUF, PCPA, Carnegie Mellon. Other ideas?

    Hi Gai,

Always enjoy you posts! Anyway, so many wonderful options, but wanted to chime in. I have had four students go through University of North Carolina School of the Arts and they are ALL working professionally. Everyone loved the experience and...the "proof is in the pudding"  as my first principal used to say.

    Best,

    Garry

    Hi Gai,

Have they checked out SCAD- one of the few bigger universities I know that welcomes dual discipline studies and lets the student design their course of study.  I think they have good scholarships available too.

    Hello Gai!

I'm sure you'll receive a lot of great names for college options but I'd like to offer some thoughts keying in on your statement that the student "does not want to incur huge student debt". As someone who works in the area of college/career with high schoolers, I have a few tips I share with students who are artists and must consider costs. For what it's worth, I will list the points here and I really need to put together a basic information sheet but I try to be mindful and personalize the conversation to the individual student I'm assisting. The following are general points for students to consider as they research potential schools:

    • On the institution's website, use the  "Net Price Calculator" to give a ROUGH estimate of what financial aid they might receive. Every institution is required by law to have a NPC but not every NPC is the same so some are much more detailed and helpful than others. If, for example, a student considers a school like UNCSA (I would agree wholeheartedly with Garry) which is a private school as well as a state school they might look at, they can see that, often the financial aid packages at a private school are much more generous than those of a public school.
    • Discuss actual dollar amounts with family. The whole conversation around college and costs can be emotionally charged. Actual numbers help students view the process in a way that can be much more practical and beneficial in the long run. For example, if there are parents/family members willing to help fund the education costs, do they have an actual number in mind for monthly/annual help?
    • What's going to "scratch the itch"? Some of our young artists want to pursue theatre because it's the most fun they've had in high school and/or it's all they know. We can help them consider schools that fit what they want or need as artists. For example, some will find they can "scratch the itch" doing artistic work in another field. Some want serious training because their end goal is Broadway. In my experience (and from feedback I've received from students over the years), one question can help students think about the college search/choice process in a way they don't usually hear from the general coverage school counselors provide. The question is, "What do you want your life to look like?"  Big question, but it's a big and costly decision we're asking young people to make.

To be frank, the student loan issue is real and it's not so much about taking out loans as much as it is about HOW you're able to pay back the loans. In 2011 I heard an interview with a former opera singer that has stuck with me and I share it with all my young artists. This man was admitted to and attended one of the most prestigious private music schools in the country to study opera. Unfortunately, the loans he accrued attending that very expensive school meant that, when he graduated, he had to start paying back the loans and, in his words, he "never sang again". In other words, he got a degree that couldn't pay for the education/degree he'd chosen. When we guide young people, it's hard to help them understand the connection between education/training and a profession and income that comes after.

I could gallop around on my college cost high horse all day but I'll leave it at that. I hope some points are helpful as you guide your student. Good luck!

    Hi Gai,
Take a look at Baldwin Wallace University in Ohio. They have an exceptional Musical Theatre program. It's a small liberal arts school that allows a student to get lots of attention. https://www.bw.edu/academics/undergraduate/music-theatre

    Hi, Gai.

I think PCPA Pacific Conservatory Theatre's two-year Acting Conservatory is the best kept secret in American Theatre.  It is important to us that our students can start their careers with little to no debt. We just had two spots open up for the class that will start on August 18. Anyone interested should feel free to contact casting@pcpa.org as soon as possible. There is more information below. PCPA also has a two-year Technical Theatre Conservatory.

    PCPA TWO-YEAR ACTING CONSERVATORY

Below you will find information about PCPA Pacific Conservatory Theatre's two-year Acting Conservatory as well as links to two short documentaries about the Acting Conservatory.

If you would prefer to avoid clicking on links in an email, you can access these videos by visiting www.pcpa.org and clicking on 'Conservatory'.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

     Acting (overview)

    Acting (students' perspective)

    WHO ARE WE?

PCPA Pacific Conservatory Theatre is an acclaimed two-year concentrated vocational training program located in Santa Maria on the Central Coast of California.  PCPA conservatory students train as members of a professional company mentored by professional equity actors with a passion to teach.

PCPA is committed to creating an inclusive, diverse, antiracist, and equitable space where all students can reach their full artistic potential.  We strive to reflect our diverse community as we train the future of the American Theater.

    TUITION

Our two-year Conservatory programs are very affordable.

We are very selective during the audition and interview process, and, therefore, very dedicated to students we accept into PCPA's two-year training programs. PCPA has worked with the state of California, Allan Hancock College, and with private donors to make our tuition affordable, so our graduates can immediately go to work as professional actors and technicians without being burdened by student loan debt.

    California Residents:

    Acting Conservatory Tuition:
Approximately $900 (nine hundred dollars) a semester for California residents.

    Out-of-State Residents:

Acting Conservatory tuition is approximately $7,000 per semester for out-of-state students; however, students can establish residency during their first year and pay in-state tuition during their second year.

Financial Aid is available through Allan Hancock College for those that qualify.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR TRAINING

The two years are intense.  Students are in the studio with their mentors from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and then return for rehearsal or production from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm, 5 and often 6 days a week.  It is all theatre all the time.  We offer no general education classes.

Our goal is to make sure our students are ready to enter the professional world after two years of training with us.  However, if you are interested in a four-year degree, PCPA can also be part of a path to a bachelor's degree.  Students earn approximately 70 units of Theatre credits in the two years with us, and those units are transferable.  We have strong relationships with colleges that accept our students as juniors.

    YOUR CLASSMATES/YOUR COMPANY

We specialize in helping students with a strong foundation turn that foundation into a long career.  We accept 30 acting students a year.  Students range from actors who have just finished strong high school programs, to actors with some college training, to actors with a bachelor's degree and some experience in the field.  As mentioned, our audition and interview process is highly selective, and, therefore, we are very dedicated to the students who join our conservatory and company.

We have 15 resident professional artists who make up the resident professional company for PCPA.  The resident artists bring a wide range of professional experience from all over the country and serve as mentors for the students in the conservatory. We have approximately one professional mentor for every 4 students.

    TO AUDITION AND APPLY

All applicants must start the audition process with a video audition. We recommend applicants use the Acceptd platform. Please follow this link to PCPA's Acceptd landing page to learn more and begin the audition/application process.

https://app.getacceptd.com/pcpatheater (This link will be live starting October 1st.)

    - Please submit your video audition by February 1st.

If Acceptd does not work for you, please email casting@pcpa.org for other options.

I graduated from Oklahoma City University with a degree in Music Theatre and plenty of dance under my belt, and with scholarships and a tiny bit of parental help was able to do it without any student loans/debt.  OCU is always within the top 10 schools you can go to to pursue the performing arts.  Highly represented all over Broadway year after year, not to mention those performing professionally outside of New York.  My wife went to Wagner and loved it.  I know it is ranking very high in theatre recently, not sure if that means MUSIC Theatre though?
