  • 1.  Radio controlled cuckoo clock

    Hi all,
I'm starting to plan for our fall production of The Beverly Hillbillies. This production requires a remotely operated cuckoo clock. In the play, the clock is supposed to be rigged to take a picture when the cuckoo pops out, so I need to be able to trigger the cuckoo to coincide with the camera clock sound. I can't rely on the hourly timer as it has to go off in quick succession.

Anyone had any experience with this play or suggestions on how to make this trick work? TIA!!

Does it need to be remote controlled, typically on a wall, there would be a person behind the wall it is attached to triggering the cuckoo bird in and out, this is the easiest, you could use an actuator and wire it up for a trigger button and run wire offstage to a switch, please calculate the stroke length properly as not to break the door on the clock, the actuators can be powerful. that's a couple of options

I should have clarified that to begin with, but it cannot be attached to the wall as it's carried onstage, placed on a mantle, then carried off. If it just stayed in on spot, I would put a hole through the flat and have crew member manually trigger the cuckoo from behind the flat.  Unfortunately, it has to also be mobile.

Can a person be behind the mantle? can a hole be in the flat for a wooden grill stick to go through and a swivel cap be put behind the hole like in a peep hole on a hotel door? then a person could be behind to operate?

Jerry's solutions are ideal and simple and how most of the effects are completed in something like Something's Afoot, for example.  If you have a student or maybe you yourself who wants to create a fun project..  a radio controlled car can be modified to create the effect you want.  We built a moving turtle for example, while I was in grad school.  Easiest thing to do is to find a car that has a moving head or something on the front so you can just sort of adapt the car mechanism.  Buy two cars, BTW as it will take a couple of attempts.

I did that show. I happened to have rc airplane components that I used to rig the cuckoo. Could probably cannibalize a cheap rec car to do the same thing.  Note that when we did this, the transmitter introduced a buzz in our wireless mics. We had to turn it on, do the trick, and turn it off.
