  • 1.  Quirky Fun Male Lead?

Ok, Let me jog your minds for a second.  I am in search of a fast-paced comedy with a strong, funny male lead. He is Arlecchino this year, so I need something fun for his senior year too. Needs to be able to be cut to a one act, and I tend to lean toward more historic, literature-based pieces with room for creative costumes. Ideas?

Analiese, it might be too close to what you are doing this year, but Sganarelle by Moliere is hilarious.  I'm going to attach the script I adapted from a public domain translation.

You might also look into Jim Dale's Scapino, which could probably be cut to a one act. (FYI: As far as I know,  Neil Simon does NOT allow cuttings to be performed even for competitions)  I love A Company of Wayward Saints by George Herman.  My favorite vignette is "Odysseus Return from the War." (Unfortunately, Concord now holds the rights.)

If it's gotta be a play, you could look at Tartuffe (if your school will let you get away with it). If a musical, can Something Rotten be cut? What an awesome show.

"Is He Dead?" is a fabulous, riotously funny vehicle for a strong male lead.  I'm not sure it could be cut to one act...but it is worth looking at.

I agree with the recent recommendation for  Is he Dead? Great piece!  You might also consider Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue or Rumors. Both have strong male leads, and are beautifully written.  I'm not sure if these could be made into a one act.  You would need to seek the publisher's permission.

There's a great one act by Molnar called "The President" which definitely is fast-paced and a tour-de-force for a male lead. You could pair it with something else for a full-length evening. Or "Seven Keys to Baldpate" is a full length in the public domain, so you could cut it any way you want.
