  • 1.  Question Bank for Student Directors

    Posted 04-03-2023 10:23

    Hello,
We are beginning our Spring One-Act festival in which all the plays are directed by advanced theatre students.  I am looking to upgrade the questions I have each director answer for me as part of their assignment.
I have questions around theme, concept statement, Super objectives, motivation, obstacles, etc. etc.
I would like to add more to these with fresh outlooks on what it means to be a director.
Any other ideas or resources that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

    Some of my tried-and-trues ...

Why did you choose to direct this piece?
Why did you cast these actors in these roles?
What about the process struck you as particularly easy (especially if that surprised you)?
What about the process struck you as particularly difficult (again, especially if that surprised you)?

And I love this one, borrowed from a good friend - Hypothetically, if this were not the final performance, but merely a late-in-the-process rehearsal, what notes would you give your actors based on what you saw here today?

    Hi guys

As the director of this piece, I was drawn to its profound exploration of human emotions and relationships. The actors were cast for their ability to embody the characters' complexities convincingly. Surprisingly, the ease with which the cast connected and developed chemistry on stage was remarkable.

Do you ask them why they are choosing a particular play? In my stagecraft and design class I ask students to think about the message of the play.. Is it relevant to today's world? Is the story worth tellling? What is the target audience for the play? Can this play inspire audience members to take action or chnage their perceptions of a particular issue? Is the script well written?
What are some of the challenges that are inherent in the script?  Does this script have a diverse cast/characters?

    Hope this helps

    Hey John,
I'm always interested in how a director's staging enhances the actors' actions (aka intentions, tactics).

    Examples:
A moves downstage to the window to tempt B into joining A in his plot.
B crosses behind A (who is seated) to interrogate her about the truth behind the handkerchief.

    Best,
