So, based on conversations with my students, I'm thinking about some kind of dark or suspenseful period drama for next year. Think The Trial of Ygor or Don Zolidis' Monster but full-length, or Angel Street with a bigger cast. Flexible cast (I'll probably have around 15, but I don't know yet), primarily female cast, preferably with opportunities for a creative and physical ensemble. No musicals or spoofs. Quality writing and challenging roles. Extra bonus if I can read at least part of it for free online. Thanks in advance for any suggestion!

    Hello, Casey,

Please consider my full-length play, Feeble-Minded White Trash, which features a cast of 20 (10m, 10w); if some actors play more than one part, the cast may be reduced to eight. Inspired by a true story set in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This play was a finalist in the 2024 Live Arts Waterworks Festival in Charlottesville.

    Synopsis:
During the late 1920s in rural southern Virginia, Hattie Clawson, an illiterate laundress with 3 illegitimate children, one of them Black, hasn't heard of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes or his majority opinion in the landmark case, Buck vs. Bell. But she will feel the impact of the Court's decision when the Commonwealth forces her to be sterilized and severs her parental rights -- permanently. What will she and her children do to survive in a society preoccupied with race and class? Will the stigma ever go away? All told, 33 states allowed forced sterilization as an outcome of the eugenics movement that swept our country during the 20th century; 65,000 Americans were affected, 85% of them were women.

Hello Cassy-- You might really like Sightings! If you can call the 1980s "period." 😀 It's a great, well-written, meaty play full of mystery and moral choices. Feel free to browse the rest of our catalog as well, and you can preview every script in its entirety before you buy. ❤️ Let me know if you have any questions or need any help! Sightings | Gitelman & Good Publishers
