  • 1.  One-act chilling/horror-ish suggestions?

    Posted 05-07-2025 23:25

For our middle school show next fall, I've decided to go with two one-act plays, or possibly even a one-act and a couple of 10 minute plays.

I've already settled on Yellow Wallpaper by Kathryn Funkhouser (Stage Partners), which will be a challenging but still appropriate, and has an active ensemble.

I'm in search of another show, or a few shorts, that would fit with the "chilling psychological" theme ... but I'm really hoping to find one that is not centered around murder.  And it has to be suitable for middle school (both in terms of topic, and in terms of their acting range).  Not a comedy (we have that covered with SpongeBob for the musical).  Ideally with many gender flexible roles and/or an active ensemble.

I found a few older posts on this topic, with lots of Poe and Sleepy Hollow options, and will be looking into those.  Aunt Leaf is still on my wish list, but I think perhaps too big a challenge.

    All suggestions happily considered!

    With thanks,

We are performing In The Forests of the Night by Del Martin at ITF this June.  It is a thriller about 13 kids who have to play a game in the forest.  One kid, who chooses number 13, has to get "sacrificed" and the others compete to see who has to be the one to tie him to the tree.
The game they play is a mystery, what happens to the "sacrificed" student is a mystery.  All we know is every so often, 13 kids have to play this game, and a 13 will get tied to the tree and then never come back.
It is a mystery thriller with a feeling like hunger games.

Belated thanks to all for the suggestions.  I haven't decided yet, but I'm digging into my summer reading now, and I've got a great list thanks to the forum-hive-brain.

    Happy summer!

Now that all of my students who were part of Trap have graduated, we're doing another play by Stephen Gregg, Ghostlight. We had a read through assigning students random parts before we broke for summer and they are very excited for it.
