  • 1.  Need a One-Act

    Posted 2 days ago

I have a student director who would like to direct a one-act as her honors project.  Any suggestion for a small cast drama, with simple sets/costumes that she could explore? She's not looking for a comedy.

    Thanks!

Hands down you need to do The Struugles by Kendra Thomas.  Check it out at pioneer drama.

Have you seen anything from Dramallama?  They have a lot of 1 acts and I had 3 middle school students who used their one act plays to do a Student Directing project. They have both comedy and non comedy scripts.

One of my favorite one acts is The Last Nickel. It's two females plus two other people for puppets. When some students did this a few years ago, the only set piece was a bed, and they made simple sock puppets. It starts off funny, but goes into much deeper material. I think it's a beautiful play that earns the tears it will cause. There are some brief references to drinking and drug use. It's about 35 minutes long.

    Cheaters by Don Zolidis

Students in a classroom must discover which one of them cheated or they all fail. Interesting story and provides an opportunity to draw parallels between Miller's The Crucible and McCarthyism.

    Rising by Arthur Jolly

Students are trapped in a classroom during the Texas floods. Their teacher left to check on the status of others and never returned. As the flood waters continue rising, the students must decide to risk their lives by climbing to the roof or to stay where they are at and hope for a rescue.

Both are very simple sets and students can wear their own clothes as costum
