Need a Large Ensemble Comedy or Comedy/Drama with some literary merit

  • 1.  Need a Large Ensemble Comedy or Comedy/Drama with some literary merit

    Posted 09-14-2021 20:24
It's that time of year again.  I am proud to say my high school program is bigger and better than ever.  We are looking for a play similar to what we have done in the past: a comedy or comedy/drama that has some literary merit.  Our past few shows are as follows:

    Almost, Maine
    Dearly Departed
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Quaran-Teens (virtual play)
She Kills Monsters (delayed from 2020, we pulled it off in May 2021!)

I am of course perusing old threads, but I am always looking for fresh suggestions.  We try to avoid comedies penned primarily for high schools and instead look for shows that are funny but also start conversations--just like the ones above.

Like many of you, I have many more female performers than young men.  But I do have a handful of the latter that are of great quality as well, including one standout who killed it as Chuck in SKM.

    Thanks for your help!

We loved doing Kate Hamill's adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. With the chorus of gossips, I got my cast up to 20. You also might like something like Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses, which has really cool opportunities for creative staging. I recently read Babette's Feast, and that's definitely on my to-do list for the future. Not a pure comedy, but funny and heartwarming.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is fun and for the most part I did not cast based on gender, both my Player and Rosencrantz were female. Not only is there the obvious tie to Hamlet, but the metaphysical conversations can be great.

I produced two Mary Zimmerman plays with teens - Metamorphosis and Arabian Nights.  Both were very successful.  Her scripts are beautifully written and accessible.  They are both ensemble pieces with lots of featured roles and opportunities for double casting if necessary.  And we had many more girls than boys.  I wouldn't classify them as comedy, but both have lighter moments, especially Arabian Nights.  They are challenging and are very theatrical and have great design potential, but can also be simple.  I insisted that if we do Metamorphosis that we have a pool.  We got permission from the school powers that be and it added so much to the production.   It was really beautiful. We staged it so that every actor had some interaction with the water so it was fair and all inclusive.  We also added a video component for the underworld, an opportunity to incorporate more participants/departments.  We commissioned an original score for Arabian Nights and that too really added to the overall effect and the period. Using existing period music would also work. Metamorphosis has one suggestive scene that might be problematic (incest), but we staged it as a dance in the pool and it worked.

I licensed the Zimmerman pieces through her literary agent, but they were easy and accessible to work with.

I also considered The Locker Next 2 Mine by Joanathan Dorf.  I really liked the script and envisioned a video component to that production too.  We never got around to doing it, but worth taking a look at and very relevant.

Here is a link to production pics on our Facebook page should they help in your decision.

We produced a play a few years back called "Lesson One, Macbeth".  It is Macbeth...  however, there is a narrator moderating a "show" of Macbeth, where there is a modern cast "translating" the play for the audience.   It was originally written for a small cast with doubling, but I gave each person their own role.  It is very well written with lots of humor at the top of the show.  However, by the end, the contemporary cast can't handle the content and have a  break-down.  The tradition cast finished the story true to form.  The playwright (Scott A. Eckert) is a friend of mine, and I will happily put you in touch with him if you are interested in a perusal script. The kids had a blast and learned Macbeth inside and out!

I really appreciate the suggestions here.  I'm not sure the Zimmerman shows are the right direction for us right now.  This is more an indictment of our audience than the quality of her shows.

I find myself super frustrated by most of the large cast options out there.  The scripts are either silly and corny, poorly written, or inappropriate for high school (and I am proud of the way we have pushed the envelope with shows like Cuckoo's Nest, Almost, and SKM).

As an example, I bought a perusal of a new show called June, July, August as Dramatists featured it on their high school page, it seemed like an interesting story with merit, and it fit our cast sized perfectly.  I didn't get past page two.  The content was so unbelievably explicit.

The search continues for that sweet spot of quality writing, a sizable cast, humor, and literary merit, along with something that is right for our audience.

Sorry for the rant, but I am at a real loss right now.  I will definitely look into the additional suggestions mentioned here.  When I've read the scripts for our past few productions, I just kind of had that feeling, you know?  The search continues.

Thank you for the input and keep the suggestions coming.

I've had success with Peter Ustinov's Romanoff and Juliet, and with The Mouse that Roared, Walter Kerr's version of The Birds, and Almost Maine. Some of these are available at local libraries.

I totally feel your pain! I go through this every year when I'm trying to pick a straight play for my students. Usually we have to do two straight shows in rep so that everyone can have a quality role. My dream is to someday write a play that hits this sweet spot we all seem to be seeking. Other pieces with decent cast sizes that I've had success with are: Still Life with Iris by Steven Dietz, Triangle by Laurie Brooks, Arabian Nights by Dominic Cooke, and The Good Fight (about British suffragettes) by Anne Bertram. You may also want to look at pieces by Liz Shipe (I enjoyed reading her Bonny Anne Bonny and Seven Athenian Women). You could also look at some offerings from Nick Hern Books like Blue Stockings by Jessica Swale. They also have a project designed to promote large cast shows for young, predominately female casts like This Changes Everything, The Light Burns Blue, and The Glove Thief. They have a play called Mermaid that's a really interesting re-telling of "The Little Mermaid" and is on my short list for next year. I also want to read The Sweet Science of Bruising, but I can't find my copy. :-(

I ended up writing an original comedy called Alma Mater, which we produced earlier this month to rave reviews.  I still have a few things to polish with the script, but the perusal should be ready soon.  The play is about a rural school district that is the subject for a new PBS documentary.  Unfortunately, the school district receives word that it is slated for closure.  Lots of hilarity and some sobering moments.  Let me know if you are interested.  Plenty of feature roles with room for as many ensemble members as you could possibly need.--

    Hi K Lang,

I know this thread is from 3 years ago, but your initial message resonated with me so strongly.  Our theatre department is also growing, and now has a bunch of talented young women (and even a growing number of talented young men!).  I, too, am looking for both comedies and dramas with literary merit.  In particular, I have been looking for a comedy for next year, but have been disheartened by the lack of quality titles I've been able to come by.

For reference, our recent shows have been:

These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich (such a beautiful, moving play)

The Play That Goes Wrong (the first comedy we've ever done - HILARIOUS, and a great challenge for cast and crew)

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (adapted by Noah Smith)

I am going to look into Almost, Maine, Dearly Departed, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but I was curious if you had come across any other titles (either comedies or dramas) for large casts that you were impressed with and maybe even ended up staging. Hoping to hear from you - thank you!

Hi, Matthew.  This was a fun thread!

As you probably read, I wrote a play called Alma Mater to try to check various boxes.  It was a huge success.  Imagine Dogberry or Michael Scott as the principal of a rural high school facing closure.  It's available for production.  Let me know if you'd like a free perusal.

We also produced Check Please (super fun but light one act).  This doesn't really fit the mold I was talking about, but we ended up doing it when we moved to two productions a year to get kids more exposure.

You Can't Take It With You was last year.  Lots of fun.  My kids were awesome and people raved about the production.  It is certainly dated though, and didn't resonate quite as well as some of the more modern shows we've done.

This year we produced my brand new, more involved, one act called Times Square.  In a nutshell it's a play about hiking and human relationships.  It's vignette-ish, funny, and accommodates a large cast.  I was interviewed on NCPR and a successful Adirondack podcast and the show received a ton of press.  This is also available for production and I can send you a free perusal.  You can easily google it to find lots of press.

For our multi-act, we produced Dearly Beloved.  One of the writers wrote for The Golden Girls.  Similar to Dearly Beloved, but instead of a funeral, the southern eccentrics are coming together for a wedding.  I enjoyed this, though it's pretty farcical and a little lighter on the literary merit.  Still lots of fun.

We are moving to a musical next year for our multi-act.  It's exciting and I have my eye on The Prom, among others.

The Play that Goes Wrong is on my shortlist for sure.  The cast size seems problematic, but the one act version could work.

Thanks for the message.  This type of dialogue is fun and productive.  Talk soon!

I just wanted to second the suggestion of "The Play That Goes Wrong."  I make it a point to frequent the shows of various high schools in my area to see what works and what doesn't work.  This past fall, I caught a production of "The Play That Goes Wrong."  It was absolutely hilarious!  I was very impressed with the interaction of the cast with the audience that took place before the show as well as the number of elementary age children in the audience who were also entertained by the show.  If your aim is for finding a script with literary merit, though, I'm not sure that "The Play That Goes Wrong" fits the bill.  However, I contrast this comedy with more serious productions like "She Kills Monsters" which my teenage children found "boring" and that of "Pippin" which my kids said they didn't understand.

It just occurred to me that I know some schools have performed a selection of plays from It's Elementary! Twelve Short Plays for Upper Elementary School Actors for their productions.  Although the title says "Elementary," some of the scripts are suitable for older age groups as well.  In particular, the play "Cake for the Queen" is a large cast play that has been performed at the high school level.  It's a comedy that provides life lessons particularly about not judging things by appearances alone.  The It's Elementary collection provides a plethora of scripts to choose from.

Late to the party, but I penned some comedies that can accommodate larger casts:

Train of Terror (a comic retelling of the 1972 horror fiction movie Horror Express starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee). It is intercut by Son of Svengoolie-like comic scenes. (In fact, we have a signed congratulatory photo of Sven in our room!) The play features a couple of song spoofs ("Red Glowy Eyes" for "Betty Grable Eyes" and "Better Run" for "Long Train Runnin.'"  (Available in annotated and unannotated, songs and theme music available in mp3s)

Bad Prom is a one-act play that is kind of a cross between Mean Girls, Boy Meets World, and the TV show Lost. It features a large, easily-expandable cast that is onstage nearly the entire run-time. (Available in annotated and unannotated scripts)

Space Hamilton is a one-act musical. It is a mash-up of different 1980s sci-fi plots and tropes, especially Flash Gordon. For the curious, there is a YouTube video of our performance of it.

Craig Pospisil has a newly published comic fantasy with a cast of 15 that follows the hero's journey in literature, JOURNEY TO THE POLES OF INNACCESSIBILITY. Dylan is comfortable with his insular life until he meets Chris, a young woman of boundless energy, on a quest to gather what magic may remain at the eight Poles of Inaccessibility, the world's most remote places. Dylan and Chris circle the globe on an epic journey of discovery, comedy, danger, and romance.
