I am trying to find preshow and between acts music for The Importance of Being Earnest.
So popular songs of the 1880s -1890s in England
everything I can find is American and very American at that.
Please offer suggestions, also what song should Algernon be playing on the piano in the beginning of the show?

A long time ago, I remember using the music of Edward Elgar as incidental music for Earnest.  I can't recall the particular tracks, but I remember it feeling appropriately British and period-accurate.  Plus, pulling from a single composer gives a sense of cohesion.  Best of luck.

I just did Earnest. We used romanticism music: like Chopin and like. We also used Gilbert and Sullivan for the happy whistling tune in the garden with Algy and Jack. The hideous song he is playing is The Wedding March.
