Marika,
I directed
Wagon Wheels West in April 2000, so it has been quite a while ago. However, I do remember that it was well received, and the cast enjoyed performing it. In fact, we performed some of the songs for a Special Needs audience, and the cast was surprised at how well and how much that audience responded to the songs. Also, it is a large cast as there are 26 named characters. plus the pupils and citizens. We are a small rural school, but we pulled it off. All in all, I would recommend
Wagon Wheels West as it is a fun show for both the cast ad the audience.
Break a leg with whatever you choose!

Considering musical for our middle school. It's so hard to find something with good comfortable dialogue and not cheese. Does anyone have experience with either of these: "The Adventures of Captain Starblaster" or "Wagon Wheels West?" Would love your thoughts.
