As I'm sure many of you have, I have done my last three plays with masked actors, with one radio play thrown in for good measure.  Where I live there are no mask requirements for live performances, but it still feels like my community and many of the students I work with are not comfortable putting them aside.  I really don't want to do another masked play so we can get back to the full expression needed to really play with the nuance of interactions.

I'm curious to know where other people are in this journey towards masklessness, and if you have a community like mine where there was some resistance how you navigated it.
    Thanks for your thoughts!

    Hi Chad

I totally get where you're coming from. I used clear masks for several shows last year, and went maskless for my spring musical. In order do to the latter, the entire cast tested for COVID every week. Masks were worn during rehearsals up until our final dress. As a result, my cast remained healthy..... until our second performance. The band hadn't been testing and weren't as good at masking during the day and so my keyboardist tested positive for covid on the day of our final performance, which we ended up having to cancel. By the end of that week, 2/3rds of the cast were sick.  I honestly don't know what I'll do for my fall production. I suppose I'll look to what the cast wants and where their comfort levels are with everything. I'll also check with the county to see what the current guidance says.

Hey Chad - The phrase "so frustrating to still be dealing with the issue" feels like such an understatement. My only suggestion would be to consider outside if you have possibilities for lighting and mics. We did that last fall and it is hard to describe how wonderful it was. we embraced this different model and promoted the "under the stars" nature of it. It helps that we were in southern California so we didn't have to worry about rain (PAINFUL IRONY MOMENT INSERTED HERE). Not sure the timing of your shows or location, but what felt at first like a lot of effort ended up being a wonderful "other thing".

I retired from high school teaching just in time to avoid the hurdles of directing during a pandemic, but I am still a very active member of our theatre community here in Asheville, where mask mandates and vaccinations have been taken very seriously.

The current practice here for most theatres is for the audience to still wear masks to protect the actors.  Vaccination cards are no longer being checked for admittance, but masks are provided at the door for anyone who didn't bring one to the performance.

After attending Broadway productions last year, I suggested that the venues I volunteer in buy "Mask Up" signs for ushers to use to remind people who take down their masks while waiting for the show to begin.  We circulate through the audience aisles with the signs at the end of the intermission as well.

In most theatres actors wear masks backstage, removing them just before entering the stage area.  They wear them in the lobby while greeting theatre patrons afterward.

Our consistent message to patrons is that their wearing of masks protects the actors so they can remove masks while performing, allowing everyone to have a better performance experience.

Of course, the audience needs to get that message before the show, so the policy is on the website where tickets are purchased, and it is clearly stated on the email confirming the purchase.  Most of the theatres send a reminder email on the day of the performance.

    Hi Chad,

I'm sorry to hear you are still having to deal with the whole mask issue. How incredibly frustrating! We've been completely mask free since our state mask mandate lifted in May of 2021. Thankfully our students and community couldn't wait to get rid of the masks and we've been completely back to pre-covid normal since then, so we haven't had the same issues you are facing. However, when we did have to wear masks, I found these great clear masks on amazon for our cast. Perhaps you've already looked into those. These masks still provide protection for those looking for it and you can see their faces, which is huge when it comes to performing on the stage. My suggestion would be to perhaps make masks optional. This way you can begin moving towards mask free performances even if it is little by little. Those that are comfortable performing without a mask can do so and those that still prefer to wear them can use the clear masks for the performances. The clear masks aren't super noticeable so they wont be a distraction to the audience. And the best part is every actor's face can be seen.

Here's a link to the masks we used for our performances:

Good luck! I hope your community begins to feel more comfortable without masks sooner rather than later for you.

Honestly, I find the response of hoping people feel comfortable without masks so frustrating.

I really want to get rid of my mask too but, and I can't emphasize this enough, WE ARE STILL LIVING IN A COVID PANDEMIC. Everyone being tired of masks and safety restrictions doesn't change that. All of our public health organizations just keep lowering their standards.  And frankly, with our current strategy of doing nothing, may be facing a second one in the form of monkeypox.

For many immunocompromised and disabled students, masks is not a matter of comfort but of literal survival. Beyond that even for the non-disabled, covid still has about a 20% rate of causing long covid. It could make you disabled.

I wear my mask for my own safety. I also wear it to signal to my students like the ones I mentioned above, that it is both acceptable and encouraged for them to wear a mask in a world where there is increasing social pressure to not wear a mask. Even as a decently confident and self assured adult, I find it so hard at times going into a space where I am part of a small minority wearing a mask. Right now I am in a full staff meeting of nearly 200 people where I am one of maybe 5 masked people. If I can make it slightly easier for a student in my productions or in my classes to not feel like a crazy person for still wearing a mask, I am going to do that.

I actually consider it a blessing that our mask mandate ran through all of my productions last year so we never had to have a debate about whether to have them or not. I am really hoping to try and advocate for requiring masked audiences for my shows to keep my students safe. Most theaters in my area are still doing it to keep their performers safe and I feel like it is common sense to ask for the same.

The amazon clear masks from the previous post are not in fact protective at all. There is no seal on them and no filtering. It even says on the listing it does not protect the wearer.

We used these a bit last year. https://bendshapemask.com/products/mask They have a big beautiful window. They have N95 levels of filtering. They have some nose visible (the clear masks that hide the nose freak me out) They don't fog up and are washable up to 10 times.  If you are using these though, These students need to ENUNCIATE and project.

If they previous masks have  back order issues at all, I havent tried them but these ones https://buy.theclearmask.com/collections/clearmask-plus/products/clearmask-plus-box also provide filtering with a big window. I just haven't used them to say how they perform. On that site be careful cause there is also another variant that is not sealed and filtering.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

Thank you, Joe, for THIS wisdom.
Certainly all teachers and Parents deal with balancing the Safety of their children with the risks of life in general every day. This perspective certainly is what we still need to be doing until this virus and it's variants are at much less risk. I just think that the simple adage "better safe than Sorry" applies,

The easy safety measures against Covid are definitely worth the alternative horrible consequences of not employing them.
Just ask anyone who has lost a loved one or is living with the fallout from having had it.

I love this forum, I love what you all do, Thousands of kid's lives are better for these Theatre Programs that you run with your dedication and thoughtfulness!!  Thank you, Thank you!!

Thank you, Joseph. As a long hauler, I will be wearing a mask until this pandemic is truly over. We have been solidly in the red since school started and masks are not required. I am one of only a couple of staff members wearing one and I get a lot of looks. You're right, it's not easy and I can't require them, so it's going to be an interesting year.
