I have a high school Theatre 2 class with 8 students (6 females and 2 males) and would like to work on a short play or One Act with them. I would like something that has some depth to it and not something light and fluffy.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Women of Lockerbie could work.  It's 5w 2 m, but you can easily split the lines of the two woman chorus (the author even recommends it, to get more people on stage). There's a lot to dig into and research. It's a heavy and sad play, but also so, so beautiful. The full-length runs around 70 minutes. There are shorter versions available, but if you're doing it just in class, I suggest cutting it on your own - or with the students.

I second the Women of Lockerbie motion.  I directed the show with my troupe this year, and my students responded beautifully to it.  I'm old enough to remember the Lockerbie crash as news, but it happened long before my students were born.  I was able to find a 50-minute TV documentary about the incident on YouTube to show to my cast, along with a separate video interview with several of the actual "laundry ladies" taken some years after the event.  That spurred a terrific rehearsal discussion, and brought greater depth and nuance to the performance.  I did expand the women's chorus from two to four, and the author (contacted through the publisher) allowed me to cut or soften three brief passages of language that was too rough for our school's stage.

There are some interesting pieces listed here: https://school-theatre.com/play-script-lists/f/5-offbeat-one-act-plays-for-high-schools

In particular, you may want to check out "Funtown" by Laura Neill.
