I Want to Read More Plays

    Hello Fellow Theatre Peeps,

How do you handle wanting to read a play before you decide whether or not you want to direct it? I have lists and lists, but I don't want to blow my whole budget reading plays. I know of several sites where they have previews and/or read-for-free options, but there are a lot of plays that I just can't find for free/cheap.

I'd love to hear how you manage!

    Thanks,

    Betsy

If you might consider a family friendly holiday musical (performance backing tracks are available), then come spend Christmas eve with the Klopeck's reliving the holidays of past and racing back to the future of these frantic rapid times of today.

"A Night Before Christmas: Christmas Cabaret Concert" a full length musical revue with 17 original seasonal songs.

13 solo/duet songs. Cast 7M, 7F, Non-gender Specific: 2 Roles. Ensemble singers/dancers with solos. Cast size and make-up adjustable to fit your needs.

Economical to stage. Simple set, just a Christmas tree with lights and living room seating is all that is needed..

I have included a free perusal script and a Soundcloud link to listen to the entire playlist as you read.

Pioneer drama gives amazing bundle prices for scripts.  I think it's something like 5 scripts for $35 or something like that.

A lot of play publishers provide free excerpts of every play in their catalog.  For example, go to the website of the play publisher YouthPLAYS ( youthplays.com )  Select a play from their catalog.  You will see a button that says "Read an Excerpt".  Click the button and you can read the first several pages of the play for free.  You don't have to purchase anything to see the free excerpt.

This is a huge problem that has gotten bigger since Concord has absorbed so many of the other publishers. Playscripts used to allow you to read almost the whole play for free, but Concord does not even allow an excerpt. Unfortunately that means for the time being I will probably not be able to produce their plays. Hopefully if more people reach out to them (and others who don't offer at least a free excerpt) they will change their policy. I would hope that playwrights who specialize in educational theatre would advocate for this as well. I read an average of 20 plays before picking one, and I cannot afford to buy a bunch of scripts that we don't end up using.

Concord has now added previews on their Playscripts titles, so you are able to read the same amount now as you did before. (Just click on the play title and then a tiny little "preview" button will show up on the image of the play).

For all of my 150+ titles, I now have previews available on my website as well - you can read as much as you like at www.donzolidis.com

    Hi Betsy,

I'm in the same situation right now. I have about 20 plays on my "possibilities" list for next year, but I can't buy everything only to realize a script won't work for us within the first 10 pages. Here's what I've discovered thus far:

Stage Partners lets you read everything for free with an account. The reps are really nice and quick about answering questions.

TRW Plays is fantastic. Reach out to your rep directly -- they'll suggest titles based on your needs, and they're often able to share a digital sample.

Dramatic Publishing has excerpts for many of their scripts.

Other than a few small publishers, pretty much everything else falls under the Concord umbrella, including Playscripts, which used to let you read 3/4 of every script for free. Some of the Concord scripts have "previews," but a lot don't. Some don't even have electronic scripts available, which means you have to pay shipping if you end up ordering a hard copy.

Your other option is New Play Exchange. You can get a "Reader" membership for $5-7/year, and most of the scripts are available for download. That's how I found the version of Treasure Island that we used last year. It's also fun to get to communicate directly with the playwrights.

    Hi Betsy,

Curious if you have a particular genre, theme, cast size in mind? We have a catalogue of award-winning, Thespy-approved plays. I would be happy to share a handful of sample scripts that fit the bill so you don't have to go combing through the entire TIFE Theatre entire catalogue.

Good on you for seeking out new works!

Thanks so much to all of you who have made recommendations!

Here's my sitch: I'm in a 5th-12th school and my shows need to work for ages 10 through 18. The entire school is less than 100 kids. I have had as many as 25 kids audition and as few as 5. I have no idea who is going to show up. I need to pick a play that hits the following aspects:

    1. Appropriate for young ones (or can be adapted to be appropriate)
    2. Has depth in terms of character development & messaging
    3. Flexible casting, ideally for 5-25 actors
    4. No giant roles that leave most of the lines to 1 or 2 kids
    5. Minimal set/costume requirements (we perform in a church hall so we have to leave no trace after strike)

Specifically for this coming fall, add:

    1. No horror/mystery plays (did that this fall)
    2. Roles for male identifying folks that are interesting/nuanced
    3. A complete beg/mid/end story rather than a vignette play

Plays that have worked well in the past: The Skin of Our Teeth, The King Stag, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, Eurydice (Sarah Ruhl), The Secret in the Wings

    I'd welcome your thoughts!

You should DEFINITELY check out The Goosegirl, a laugh-out-loud fairy tale adaptation about empathy (for smaller cast), and The Long Leather Bag, a large-cast ensemble fairy tale about magic, mystery, family, and greed. You can read them for free, and they come with free lesson plans! Fun and flexible, but with thematic depth

👉The Goosegirl by J. Myles Hesse Play | Gitelman & Good Publishers

👉The Long Leather Bag by Ian MacInnes Play | Gitelman & Good Publishers

If you want something Shakespeare-inflected, check out these comedies with medium/large casts that are really flexible. To Thine Own Self Be True, where a high school senior playing Hamlet finds his life beginning to resemble the Dane's; and Mick and Beth Rule the School, wickedly funny Scottish Play remix. These are also free to read and come with lesson plans!

👉To Thine Own Self Be True by Shannon Chinn Play | Gitelman & Good Publishers

👉Mick and Beth Rule the School by Nancy Kissam Play | Gitelman & Good Publishers

Early in my career, I scoured used bookstores and sales and bought a ton. I also argued for some money in the budget for perusals. Also, I think this is the best forum. I keep a list of the plays I've chosen for the last thirty four years, all good for a seventh to twelfth grade school. I posted this list here a few years ago, but I'd be happy to send it to you. I just did The Heart of Robin Hood with 24 actors this fall. Dominic Cooke has a terrific Arabian Nights that would serve you well!

We did the Dominic Cooke Arabian Nights several years ago, and it was SO GOOD! It is multiple stories, which can be rehearsed separately, but there's a clear over-arc with Scheherazade and the King.

    Hi Betsy,

Looks like our colleagues came to your rescue!  LOTS of ideas where to get free scripts for preview.  I want to compliment you for reaching out as well as your interest in doing shows that are not Disney or other big ones.   GOOD FOR YOU!!!!

One last recommendation - CPA Theatricals also gives free perusal scripts.   www.cpatheatricals.org     Even though the shows are licensed by TRW, Concord and Gitelman & Good Publishers - they will give you any script for free for you to check out.

    All the best,
    Larry Little

Hi Betsy (and fellow theatre peeps),

I'm a retired theatre teacher with a pretty extensive personal MS/HS play library that I'm looking to rehome. Since I purchased them myself over the years, I'd love to recoup a little of the cost, but mostly I'd just like them to go to directors who will actually use them.

You wouldn't need to take the whole collection-people could simply pick titles they'd like to add to their own libraries. I'm happy to ship via Media Mail to keep costs low. I also have an inventory list and photos of the plays if anyone is interested in browsing.

Feel free to privately reply to me if you'd like to take a look!

    Hi everyone!

I have to share a website that I've used quite a bit for the past few years - it has helped me to clear my bookshelves of those I no longer want/need - while also getting some new reading material.

    Check out www.paperbackswap.com

I personally think it is worth it to do a minimal yearly subscription (about $20) so that I can get unlimited swaps, but you can do a few periodically for free, I believe.  The site serves as a "matchmaker" essentially - I have a virtual bookshelf where I have the books listed that I'm willing to part with  - just by typing in the ISBN. You can create a wish list - or search for wanted items- anytime.  I get an email when someone requests one of my books - the site creates a mailing label for me to print - and I send it via media mail (about $3-4).  Once it is received, they confirm that it arrived, and I get a "credit" - which allows me to claim a book from someone else.   You pay to send books out, but never to receive them.   The search function allows you to select genre, title, author, etc.  It's very user-friendly and it helps to keep books out of the landfills & recycling centers.

So the cost out-of-pocket for each books is the media mail postage, essentially.   I've cleaned out my kids' collections to keep only the most special ones - and I keep my giveaway/listed books on a shelf in a spare bedroom.   I have gotten lots of books for my theatre kids & classes this way!   Lots of folks have scripts listed, but also textbooks, resource books, etc.   And despite the site's name, they are not all paperbacks.  I've been doing this since before COVID, and I still have about 100 credits.

As a former Waldenbooks employee during HS and college - I love books!  As a theatre person, I love being able to look for something when a student asks for something, and I can usually find something and just "spend" one of my credits to get it.

I must start reading for next year's fall play - looking for something murder/mystery, or thriller... or just good dramatic storytelling.  But I must avoid lots of topics to satisfy admin & sensitive community members.  Last few years have been Clue, Crucible, Puffs, Frankenstein and Fox on the Fairway. Considering Trap by Stephen Gregg, for example ... but would love more ideas, and will search these archives & keep an eye on this thread for suggestions.

Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone!

    Missy

Next Stage Press has a large number of sample pages for its scripts available on its website.  For example, for the family-friendly, large cast holiday comedy play, "The Christmas Crisis", Next Stage Press has posted the entire first act of the script here:  https://www.nextstagepress.com/the-christmas-crisis/
