  • 1.  Help with the HOURGLASS for Freaky Friday

    Hello, my Brilliant Colleagues!

Our winter musical is Freaky Friday and I'm wondering what advice you have for building/renting/buying the HOURGLASS that needs to break into pieces but also reattach to use again.  And the script says it should glow - which would be a bonus in my opinion.

I'm kinda at a loss with this one - all help is appreciated!

    Becky,

We just performed Freaky Friday  this past November.  We built two hourglasses, one that came apart and one that did not to use in the final scene.  We cut out plywood squares and used dowel rods as the frame. Actually, our dowel rods were pieces of wooden canes that we already had. I purchased inexpensive plastic bowls at our local dollar store.  For the lights, we ordered remote control button lights that we found on Amazon.  We taped the lights in the bowls and hot glued the bowls to the plywood and cut the dowel rods to length we wanted.  For the hourglass that comes apart, we used thin nails that would come out easily when Katherine and Ellie pulled on each end.  After each performance we simple tacked it back together.  Someone will need to be backstage working the remote control for the lights which the ones we used changed colors.  We also. dimmed and changed the color of the. stage lights for added effect.  We didn't do it, but if you can find some kind of clear tubes that you can glue between the bowls, the hourglasses will look even more like hourglasses.  Basically, we went as simple as possible, but still looked impressive.  There is a video on Youtube showing how to make an hourglass, but i found it rather complicated.  Also, MTI also lists a company to rent one from if you want to go that route.  Hope this helps.  Our cast and audience really loved the show.  Hope yours goes well.
