  • 1.  Got a play suggestion?

    Posted 05-29-2022 08:10

For the first time ever, I am stumped for a fall play. It is an extreme building year.  Thanks to the pandemic,  they don't have the experience and emotional maturity to do something really challenging like the past (We have produced Laramie Project, Women of Lockerbie, Almost, Maine, etc.) We just read Alan Haehnel's "The Long View" in class and the students' really liked the play, but I want something a little longer than an hour show. While I really want to direct a show with a box set like an Agatha Christie mystery or a Neil Simon play, I think I need to direct a play that has age appropriate teenage characters.  I would like a play with 12-20 characters.  Anyone have suggestions for a good full length play with teenage characters, for my summer reading list?

    Thanks!

Have you considered a comedy? Game of Tiaras or the Suessafication of Romeo and Juliet were great crowd pleasers and my cast loved doing them. I recommend looking at other comedies too by Don Zolidas.

We just finished The Outsiders, which was very well received. We did a performance with all male leads, then flipped it with all female leads. The kids loved performing the show.

We did "Trixie, the Teen Detective and the Mystery of Gravestead Manor" by Cynthia Mercati for our Fall play this year. The title is a bit of a mouthful, but the script is really fun. Think a comedic Nancy Drew-esque story. My students absolutely adored it, and it was one of the best shows we've done. It has a lot of really fun roles and was perfectly suited for our needs at the time. You can even do an Agatha Christie style box set, complete with a secret passage. I highly recommend giving it a read!

You might try the plays "Juvie" and "Addict." They are both by Jerome McDonald and are published by Dramatic Publishing Company; both are specifically for teens, they are quite flexible in number of characters and genders, and most importantly, they both tackle problems teens face. You can also be quite creative in the way you stage the shows. I did them both years ago, and students really loved them - both as actors and audience.
