  • 1.  Emma! A Pop Musical

I am looking at doing Emma! A Pop Musical next year and I was curious to see if anyone has experience with this show? I feel like my students could go either way with this show where they would be really into it or they think it's super cheesy. I just wanted to know if anyone had success with this show.

    Thank you!

My Acting II/III class did this as a fourth quarter project last year and LOVED it!  The music is generally too complicated for a class show, but I also have instrumental music background and I had a class full of very strong singers.  It is a little cheesy, but in the vein of High School Musical, so my kids were forgiving of the cheese.  They liked the wide variety of music and the opportunity for just about everyone to have a solo.  I liked the simple school setting and easy costumes as an added bonus.  According to the script, several couples kiss.  It was a good learning experience for my class, but something you might want to consider in your decision. The show was also well-received by our one-night-only audience.  It's catchy and fun.

We audition on Tuesday and the show goes up in spring.  Lots of enthusiasm in the air as we are a girl's school with a strong music program. I'll let you know how it goes. We do a big musical in the fall and this is definitely not that! The recorded music seems like it works though, and Playscripts have been cooperative and prompt. Materials arrived quickly and prices are affordable.

I am also considering this musical for the spring. Being an all-girls school, it seems like a fun choice. I have some of the same concerns as above..., cheese factor and also whether or not the known songs will be welcomed or looked at as "not a real musical". I was curious what was meant by  "We do a big musical in the fall and this is definitely not that!" We did Sister Act last year, which was AWESOME and Into the Woods the year before. I don't want this to look like a step down from "higher end", "real" musicals.  Would welcome any thoughts.

My daughter played Harriet in the World Premiere cast a couple of years ago. It is pretty cool because their names are in all the scripts now (sorry, proud dad moment). They loved doing it and the audiences really got into it as well!

I also wonder about this question of "not a real musical"! I introduced it to my students yesterday and they were uniformly like, "Meh."
