  • 1.  Eligibility Question

    Hi!

I am a second year director in Iowa and, while I know all states have different requirements, I am needing some insight on a student's academic probation. As drama does not have games/meets like other extra curricular activities, if a student is failing at any our quarterly grade checks, they cannot come to rehearsal until they are passing. However, Iowa standards are different for semester grades and if a student fails a class at the semester mark, their probation starts on the first day of a game/performance, which would mean they would miss our show. Now, I knew this student was a risk academically, so I did not place them in a job of any great responsibility, but I am curious if anyone has followed mandates such as this, or if something different has been worked out. Both my principal and I are relatively new to handling situations like this, so any feedback would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

Leigh- as a district we use the same rules as all sports and follow CHASA.  That means that all students must be eligible 3 weeks out or they are removed from the show.  We do weekly checks to keep students on track and if a student is falling behind they can rehearsal (though not perform) we usually have them work on academics instead of rehearsing for that week so they can remain eligible.  I hope that helps.
