Needing some good ideas.... I am producing Wonderland High and need a black and white checkerboard floor, any creative ideas?  I have an oak wood stage so adding a layer of plywood with painted floor may not work.

We have a bunch of dance floor squares, that attach to each other via velcro on the sides, that are white on one side and black on the other.  We use these anytime we need to create a patterned floor.  They do lay on top of the existing floor, they do nothing harmful to the floor beneath it, they take 20 min tops for 1-2 people to lay out or pick up.  And they're useful anytime you need a dance floor in a place that doesn't have one.

Tape together sheets of 1/4 inch Masonite or tempered hardboard using gaff tape and paint.  You might have to tape the edges to your floor.  But in my experience, the whole thing becomes relatively monolithic and does not move.  Ground cloths are another alternative but they can be rather pricey.  Masonite for our stage runs about 1100 dollars and we only do that once every 5 years or so as it is a pretty good surface to work on and it protects the floor beneath.

Another idea is to just suggest the floor on the perimeter of your space and perhaps on platforming, etc.

    Hope that helps
