    Hi everyone,
I'm so excited to be here! I am stepping into an exciting position for the first time and I would love some advice. I will be the new Choral/Performing Arts instructor for grades 6-12 at my school. Middle grades 6th and then a 7/8th will be musical theatre. High school grades will be Concert Choir.  The tricky part is my middle grades will only be with me for a semester and then I may no see them again until next year. Classes are 90 minutes though. Any thoughts on structure/text from those that maybe at a 4x4 schedule or advice?

    Hello,

This does present a unique challenge. One solution is to include those students in their off-semester with performance opportunities.
Also, is the instrumental music program functioning on the same schedule? The schedule can rob you of the consistent interaction desired by performing arts teachers.

    Thanks,

    Dana

Congrats on your new position. I highly recommend Michael Chekhov’s approach to training as it suits all the performance arts and styles. It frees the imagination and the body, offers artistic concepts like atmospheres which are so essential in choral, band, acting. And building inner presence with concentration and joy-useful for anyone who appears before an audience. Language and concepts( laws of composition, improvisation, ease, centeredness, ensemble, beauty, wholeness) foster love, self esteem, team orientation and joy in the arts and when taught early can be referenced across all the stages of the journey. Because Chekhov never calls upon the child to reference their own past as a source, not their own present limitations or self conception, and because it sees the best in each, it is an excellent approach for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
