Catherine, The rights can be applied for here. We have secured rights for a production scheduled for this fall. We bought the scripts on Amazon and supplied the invoice to the rights holder as proof we had adequate scripts for the show. As far as the gendered casting, we have not yet made the request, ...

"The Fantasticks" sounds like a good fit - cast of eight, very minimal in all aspects. MTI holds the rights. ------------------------------ Josh Kauffman Teacher, Thespian Society/Drama Club sponsor Winfield City Schools Winfield, AL ------------------------------

Variation on a recognizable theme. Advice please: For the first eight years of my program and through three high school principals (including the current one), our spring play has been presented for two in-school performances and attended by the whole student body. Now, for the second year, my principal ...

I'd love to, but the principal has given a hard no on in-school performances this year. ------------------------------ Josh Kauffman Teacher, Thespian Society/Drama Club sponsor Winfield City Schools Winfield, AL ------------------------------

Would you consider doing it with costumed actors instead of puppets? Might be easier and more cost effective (and puppets creep me out as a rule, lol). ------------------------------ Josh Kauffman Teacher, Thespian Society/Drama Club sponsor Winfield City Schools Winfield, AL --------------------- ...

Good morning (or whatever time of day it happens to be as you read this), My high school program will be presenting Radium Girls this spring. We have for a long time presented our spring show during the day for two matinees, with the whole high school field tripping to see it. This year, for the second ...

I just performed in a community theater production of Rotten and LOVE that show - I also saw it on Broadway with the original cast. I think it depends on your community. I definitely could not do it at my school because of the homosexuality-based humor, the digs on religion, and the proliferation of ...

I'll add a couple resources I have found great scripts at: Stage Partners Playscripts Students respond to your energy, no matter what the script is. If you sell it, they'll engage and have fun. That said, it never hurts to ask the students what they're interested in doing and investigate their ...

This might fall under "Flats," but if your set needs to be mobile, a rolling doorway can be super useful. Pretty straightforward to frame up with 1x3 and quarter-inch louan, with 2" casters. (Loosely-related side note, I always use dummy knobs and ball catches rather than functional doorknobs - has saved ...

In general? If you have the storage space for a stock of 4x8 flats, they can be painted and reconfigured in countless ways to create interiors. Just carry 'em in, zip 'em together, and jack 'em so they don't fall down. Depending on the size of the stage, maybe six walls, one or two doorways and windows. ...

If it's gotta be a play, you could look at Tartuffe (if your school will let you get away with it). If a musical, can Something Rotten be cut? What an awesome show. ------------------------------ Josh Kauffman Teacher, Thespian Society/Drama Club sponsor Winfield City Schools Winfield, AL -------- ...

We've done the Romulus Linney (DPS/Concord) twice, and it's my favorite. Very faithful, been around forever, versatile cast size. ------------------------------ Josh Kauffman Teacher, Thespian Society/Drama Club sponsor Winfield City Schools Winfield, AL ------------------------------

With the number of locations the show calls for, I recommend minimalism in the design. I've found that antique stores tend to have a lot of furniture and props that could be representative of this time period. One store local to our school lets us borrow items in exchange for free advertising. Maybe ...

I'm looking for a good adaptation of Lord of the Flies. And I want to do it with a gender-inclusive cast without breaking the rights agreement. I figured there would be dozens of different versions out there, but the only one I have found is the Nigel Williams adaptation (which I intend to read). Looks ...

I give them every year, based on their cumulative GPA at the time I check it (usually middle of 4th quarter). 3.0 to 3.45 is a Scholar, 3.5 to 3.95 is Vice President's List, and 4.0 is President's List. That seems pretty elite, but I did have two President's Scholars (a sophomore and a senior) this ...

Man - I lost mine at a drama banquet like two or three years ago, and didn't even notice till this post went up. So much for ceremony! For a play, six weeks total, three times a week for about 3 hours for the first five weeks and every night during during tech/dress/performance week for more like 4 hours. We usually to two 6-hour Saturday workdays. For a musical, we sometimes go seven weeks. You'll always wish you had more rehearsal ...

We've done Oedipus Rex and Midsummer, for the classic value and often paired with design and/or dramaturgy activities. When the Drama Club has a show going on, we often start with a reading of that play in class and do some scene work, design assignments, and/or character studies. It helps build interest ...

Happy Friday! I'm looking at creating a shadow-puppet stage as an element of our set design, to creatively handle some storytelling elements. Does anyone have experience constructing, rehearsing with, or using shadow puppetry on your stages? How best to light, best materials to use? I'm doing plenty ...
