Thank you, everyone, for sharing! Your sets are way more ambitious than mine, and they look awesome! ------------------------------ Cassy Maxton-Whitacre Theatre, Film, and Communications Instructor Shenandoah Valley Governor's School Fishersville, VA ------------------------------

I'm re-awakening this old thread to see what other suggestions people have for non-musical plays that still have opportunities for the actors to sing or play. Next year should be my non-musical year, but I still have a lot of talented singers that I could feature. No Shakespeare, please. We have a professional ...

Has anyone used canvas or muslin flats in one of their set designs, and if so, are you willing to share pictures? I'm doing a research project on different approaches to set building, and I'm having trouble finding good references images of Broadway flats in use. Thanks in advance! ---------- ...

I have used scenes from Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, Independence (by Lee Blessing), Anton in Show Business, These Shining Lives, and The Children's Hour. ------------------------------ Cassy Maxton-Whitacre Theatre, Film, and Communications Instructor Shenandoah Valley Governor's School Fishersville, ...

You could see if you would be allowed to cut Sing Down the Moon or Perseus Bayou (I think they're both from Dramatic Publishing). They're reasonably priced and I think could be fun for your group. ------------------------------ Cassy Maxton-Whitacre Theatre, Film, and Communications Instructor Shenandoah ...

Over the years, I've started looking for more electronic perusals, particularly e-perusals. Someone has already mentioned this resource, but Stage Partners - New Plays for Theatres & Schools. Always Free to Read (yourstagepartners.com) lets you read everything for free, and Playscripts lets you read ...

We loved Still Life With Iris and Dominic Cooke's version of Arabian Nights. Those both have great, uplifting endings. ------------------------------ Cassy Maxton-Whitacre Theatre, Film, and Communications Instructor Shenandoah Valley Governor's School Fishersville, VA ---------------------------- ...

Thanks for your ideas, everyone. Do you have recommendations of some go-to items that you would always re-use? I'm working on some grant applications. I do already have actor blocks and access to flats. It sounds like PVC pipe, muslin -- what else would be good to have around? ------------------------------ ...

Hello, theatre hive mind! I'm looking for your favorite tips and hacks for creating an interesting set design with minimum construction. I don't have a technical director, and since we rent a theater space, we have a very narrow build window. Unfortunately, our lighting grid tends to wash out projections, ...

I directed this in 2019, and it was so much fun! I have to confess that I wasn't able to be as creative with the staging as I would have liked -- I felt rather hampered by our proscenium stage. We were able to be pretty creative with the chorus of gossips. We did end up getting to do one performance ...

I'm finishing my thesis at the Mississippi University for Women and expecting to graduate next semester with my MFA in Theatre Education. The program requires 60 hours, mostly online, and can be completed in 2.5-3 years. There are two summer residencies of about 10 days each, which are actually pretty ...

Rebecca, did you look into Regent? I wasn't super impressed with their program, but it might be a way for you to get the few classes you need. ------------------------------ Cassy Maxton-Whitacre Theatre, Film, and Communications Instructor Shenandoah Valley Governor's School Fishersville, VA ---- ...

The Kate Hamill adaptations that I've read feel very fresh and female empowered, while still being true to the original story. They have lots of great female characters, and Sense has a chorus of Gossips which can be super fun. I'm attaching the trailer for the Bedlam production, which I found really ...

I second the Kate Hamill recommendations. You could also look at Triangle by Laurie Brooks, The Good Fight by Anne Bertram, She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen, and Mermaid by Polly Teale. The latter is published by Nick Hern Books out of the UK, and they have a wide selection of female-heavy scripts that ...

Have you looked at either Wanda's World or the 57th Annual Math-lete SUM-it? Hi all, I'm giving this a bump in the hope that some of you will have some ideas for me now that the year is winding down. I'd love to find some topics/exercises that are approachable for new actors but still challenging for my more experienced students. Thanks! ------------------------------ Cassy ...

Well, you know I did it with a primarily white cast! And of course, you're welcome to borrow my script if you need to re-read it. We tried to approach it from a cultural appreciation rather than appropriation standpoint. And I do think that there's more freedom to tell other stories in educational theatre ...
