  • 1.  Like Peter and the Starcatcher

    Was wondering if folks can think of some properties, plays or musical, that might be similar to Peter and the Starcatcher in that the script makes use of an ensemble cast, high energy performance, with creative and flexible staging where simple objects become great things?  Any ideas?

    Story theatre is my absolute favorite so i produce this as much as possible. Scripts like this include:
    Robert Schenkkan's Fire in the Hole
    Richard Tulloch's The Book of Everything (I couldn't recommend this show any more!)
    946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tipps

    Jessica, thank you for your suggestion of Tulloch's THE BOOK OF EVERYTHING. I have signed up with AustralianPlays.org to preview the script. Since you have done it, do you think it could be made into a one-act (with permission, of course)?

    I did a production of Timberlake Wertenbaker's The Ash Girl inspired by PatS a couple of years ago. It is a retelling of Cinderella with the Seven Deadly Sins as characters. It is not as funny and explores  darker themes, but the ensemble and movement work were similar to Peter.

    Look at Story Theatre and A Company of Wayward Saints.  Both are a lot of fun!

    Thanks for the suggestions, some other titles that come to mind for me are Godspell and Joseph...  I would prefer to work with a newer piece, this year.

    Also written in story theater is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Both of Jim Leonard's works perform well in this style (The Diviners and Anatomy of Gray). We also used story theater for the fiction sections of Don Zolidis's Monster. 

    The Book of Everything can absolutely be a one act. We used it this past year and won states. It won the year before that in TX. We used different cuttings for different reasons, and I happy to share how we cut it. Our festival allows for 40 minutes.

    Puffs is super fun. Doing it in the Fall. All 7 years of the harry potter story from the Puff perspective. Def a great ensemble piece. Ron and Hermione are mostly portrayed as just mops Harry is carrying around. In the off Broadway production the sorting hat was a giant one of those folded paper fortune tellers. I recommend

    Interview: the ensemble becomes the TV set, the machine, the operating table, the subway, etc.

    Godspell: the ensemble tells the story with puppetry & any props for wailing wall, animals in Noah’s ark, Samaritan Donkey, etc.
