Best colleges for Musical Theatre

    Hi, everyone!
I know we all have our favorites, but a friend has asked me to give her a list of top schools and second tier schools and I thought I would bring it to the crowd with the greatest knowledge.  They live in Florida, but I think are open to anywhere in the US.

All my best to everyone!  Hope your school year is off to a great start!  Welcome back to those of you just getting started.  We've been in school a month and our first set of one-acts are in three weeks.  Three weeks!!! I have to go!!

    Hi Carolyn,

There are a ton of good programs out there, though many are more acting and not just musical theatre--like Juilliard, USC, Cal Arts and DePaul, for example.  Obviously, NYU comes to mind, as do UCLA, which has the very well funded Ray Bolger Musical Theater program, and Carnegie Mellon.  Cincinnati College of Music also has a great rep, and Emerson is probably strong as well, as their reputation in general is quite good.  Boston University has a strong theatre program and I believe just started a musical theatre track.  Of course, there are also more conservatory-style programs like AMDA.

I'm sure there are many others.  A question to consider is whether it might be better to major in something a little less narrow (i.e. acting vs only musical theatre acting).  My two cents.

    Cheers,
    Jon

Jonathan has listed many of the programs with good track records and staff. I always say to my students "remember there are new Musical Theatre programs popping up every day- that's were the new enrollment is coming from. As the relatively new (at least to an old timer like me) BFA programs in acting slow down, we now have new BFA in musical theatre. So, check into how many alumni are actually working in the field after graduation. I am not saying "immediately" on graduation but after sometime. I hope this makes sense, I am at school between classes.

I think everyone is giving great advice.  In my capacity, I actually get to travel all over the country to work with theatres who are doing musicals that involves flying (Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, etc).  There are many theatre programs all across the country.  They are as different as snowflakes and each program has something to offer, however, as a potential "customer," a student should look at a few key items before choosing their program.
    1) How well connected are the professors?  If they have connections outside and do work outside the school, that is a good indicator of the quality of the mentorship.
    2) Look for programs that have specialists in each area: vocal, music, dance, movement, etc.  A smaller program might guarantee that you spend more time onstage, but a larger program may allow you to focus on specific areas in your development that need the most work.  Do not immediately dismiss a program with grad students - remember that grad programs often attract professors with wider exposure.  You have to weigh the pros and cons of each and find the right choice for you.
    3) Where do you want to work when you graduate?  A good school in Los Angeles may not set you up well to work in New York.  Many top notch programs are "feeder schools" for certain markets.  If you are looking to enter that market, find a good "feeder school" and they will train you to enter that market.
    4) What do the students say?  Once you narrow down you school choices, I recommend a visit where you stay with current students and "walk a mile in their shoes".  If the school does not offer to set that up for you, ASK for it.
    5) As you are gathering your information, keep your current mentor informed.  Your current teacher knows you . . . probably better than you know you . . . so talk it out with them.  Sometimes simply hearing yourself talk through the options with someone you trust will help you decide on the best option for you.

    I hope this helps.

My biased opinion includes Otterbein University in Ohio (my alma mater.) They have really taken things to the next level in the past 10 years and get their graduates truly prepared for professional work. Many MT majors have appeared on Broadway and national tours fairly quickly after graduation. Also Oklahoma has a reputable program. Jon's list is good as well. Baldwin-Wallace in Ohio has a good conservatory program. Of course I always tell my students that you will get out of a program what you put in. I wish I had been given that advice. It's not always about the reputation of the program, it's about the drive and initiative of the student.

I, too, have a slightly bias opinion, but having attended both a small university and a very large national university, I think I can honestly say that the best musical theatre program was at the smaller college.  Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia offers an excellent musical theatre program that allows all of their majors the opportunity to perform in every musical production, something that I did not see at Florida State.  The faculty is well connected with the professional world which is vital in assisting students with their individual networking.  Many of VSU's students have gone on to successful careers in professional theatre, including Broadway, film, and television.  And while FSU's program is an excellent choice for musical theatre, I can't say enough about the hands-on education the theatre technology programs offer.  They are absolutely the best!

There are so many great programs out there, but just want to point out a special advantage of my own alma mater, NYU (I went for Dramatic Writing, not Musical Theatre), which is that your campus is New York City itself.

Coming from Kentucky, that was a very welcome and glorious change of pace for me, and it was a huge asset as I pursued my love of musical theatre in various ways.  Freshman year, I began reviewing for the school paper and getting free tickets to shows; sophomore year, I found a like-minded collaborator who lived in the city to start writing musicals with; I did a summer internship at TheaterMania, which soon hired me as an editor; junior year, I submitted a play to Ensemble Studio Theatre and they did a reading of it.  All along I was getting the chance to see musicals in all stages of development and meet working musical theater professionals -- and this was just *outside* of the great stuff going on within the school!

I feel like living in NYC was critical to getting some of those experiences since there are so many theaters, theater people, and theater-related businesses and institutions here.  Other people could make a very strong argument for the benefits of smaller schools in other towns, but just wanted to offer up part of the reason I loved going to NYU (it also happens to be a terrific school!).

Since you're from Kentucky, you may know about NKU in Highland Heights. With my MA in Education I have an emphis in theatre from there. The program is strong with many going to NY and touring with the Broadway series. I have had a number of students attend there and do very well. ------------------------------------------- Denise Dirkes Holy Cross High School Covington KY -------------------------------------------

    Hi Denise,

I lived very close to NKU and many of my classmates went there, so I think it's really cool that they have such a good theater program!  I think it may have still been developing when I lived there, so I never saw any NKU productions (I saw quite a bit over the river at CCM), but it looks like they're doing great stuff.  The northern KY/greater Cincinnati area definitely has a lot to offer people who love musical theater.  When I was in high school, I ushered at the Aronoff Center and enjoyed seeing all the touring productions for free  :)

In my search for a good school with a specific interest the best advice I could give is for her to go and look at the schools. A department may say that they have a good musical theatre department, but that's what they are supposed to say on a website or brochure. Ask around! Talk to alumni, current students, sit in on classes or go see a show there! The best thing she could possibly do is visit. The schools I looked at and have heard great things about are: CCM, DePaul, Carnegie Melon, Webster, FSU, FloArts, NYU, UCLA, & Cal Arts! Hope that helps!

Wow, I'm really surprised that I don't see my alma mater - The University of Michigan - listed here.  The program has grown tremendously in it's thirty short years of development and has a long list of both Broadway performers and creators as alumni.  The program was only a couple years old when I transferred there from Syracuse University (also a great program) as a musical theatre major.  The program is run like a conservatory in the theatre/voice/dance classes but also gives you the opportunity to take other outstanding classes in a first class University.  If you heart is set on Broadway after graduation, it has a Senior Showcase every spring which connects the soon to be grads with contacts and agents in NY.

There is a crazy blog post on College Confidential in which someone tracked Broadway alums back to their degrees and schools. Michigan is in the top five for the most Broadway Alums 5 years out, 10 years out, and over all.  Many of the other colleges already mentioned are there as well.

While my degree did not take me to Broadway, it took me to National Tours for a couple years until I decided I'd rather raise a family and teach.

    Go Blue!
