Now with our great GOOGLE (lol) we can find many lists of overdone monologues. A list that the student wants to refer to during their search. Here are a few:

http://www.mycollegeaudition.com (which also has a good check list of what to look for and avoid).

    From Webster University: http://www.webster.edu

    Also: http://auditioningforcollege.com
And there are many more. A lesson plan might be a web search and a report back on helpful information and sites. This is a involved process. I have around 20 students a year prepping for this worrisome project. Good Luck.

"The Big Book of Moliere Monologues" features 160 monologues from the plays of Moliere in rhymed iambic pentameter. It also includes biographical info, plot background and a running "ticker" to suggest how long each monologue should run in audition/performance. If you're having trouble finding a "comic classical" monologue that isn't done to death, this should be a good resource. (Available on Amazon)

Don't know if this is an 'over-used' resource, but I am certainly going to use it for the first time this year as I attempt to search for good monologues for my students: Gai Jones' 'Raising the Curtain' has at least 5 pages of female and male monologues. It's a list of plays that have good monologues in them. Personally I have reservations about pulling a monologue from a book of same, since there really are only so many monologue books to choose from, plus knowing the rest of the play is a must yadda yadda yadda. Hope this helps! ------------------------------------------- Phillip Goodchild Valrico FL -------------------------------------------

I like how Phillip mentioned to look at sources for overused monologues.  I always tell my kids to avoid monologue books and google searches for their more serious/supposed to be prepared auditions because they need to know as much as they can about the monologue and the writers intent with the character.

In my experiences and talking with professors about what they look for in the contrasting monologues for auditions, I'm told most look for three things.  1.  A strong moment of truth.  2.  A contrasted character.  3. A professional/prepared/confident approach.

After those three things it is a lot about finding the right material for the right kid, I encourage my kids to read as many plays as they can to find good material.

I would like to hear from other professors as to what they look for in auditions.

Although I allow students to use pieces from monologue books and internet searches I ALWAYS recommend using a full script. I like Chekov pieces and have them avoid Shakespeare unless it is specifically requested. I try to provide a variety of scripts for my kids to look through.
