  • 1.  Sound board app.

    Posted 11-18-2015 12:24

I have a question regarding sound....and please keep in mind that I am not tech savvy!  Is there an app that we could use on our ipad that would operate as a sound board?  All we have is a connection to the sound board at our school so that whatever plays over the ipad, plays over the system.  We don't have the capacity at this time to do anything more with our system, so I am looking for an app that would allow use more flexibility...like playing two sounds at once.

    Suggestions?  Thanks!

For a great app for controlling sound FX Live 2 is great, you can play many sounds at once, very easy to use.

For controlling the levels of there sound board, depends on the model of the board you have. Some of the newer models have apps that let you adjust levels from an app.

Use Qlab. It is the standard in the industry. There are countless tutorials for the "advanced" features. You can layer sounds and adjust volume for each (because sounds are often recorded at different levels and if you're paying them at the same time, you want them to blend! This also allows you to, for example, have a really loud train whistle and a gentle click clack of the train all the while playing the shuffling feet of passengers!). You can also readjust levels, starting points in soundtracks, etc. as you go through rehearsals.  PM me if you need assistance.

    Hello,
What are you using as the "player"? Is it ITunes? Could you layer your sounds in GarageBand to create a single sound effect and then play it?

    Just a thought.

Have you looked at QLab? It's a Mac program and it's free for the basic program. It was recommended to me by Actors Theatre of Louisville. When I attend a Broadway show I check and see what program they use and all but 1 production has used QLab. If you have a digital light board it can be linked and have a sound and light cue hit at the same time. Advanced levels of the program incorporate video. I just put a new student on sound and she picked it up in one day.

I have had very good success in using QLab on many events -- both small and large ....

I'll second the recommendation to look at QLab.  It's easy to learn and use, reduces user errors, and best of all it's free.  We purchased the advanced version last year to also control video.  Great tool for a Mac.

Just to piggyback on some of the suggestions... The figure 53 guys who created QLab are extremely helpful. I haven't tried on an iPad, and I prefer a physical button rather than a touch screen, so we use a MacBook pro. It might be worth the fundraising, begging of admin, if you use it for all shows in the auditorium.

I have always found it to be a bad decision to run sound from something like an iPad.  I have witnessed several incidents when the iPad either went down during a show or (like with many computers) it decided to do its own thing at a crucial time.  It is much safer, I think, to control sound in the old tried and true ways.

A few years ago I came across the GO BUTTON app for iPad and iPhone, which gave us the ability to easily run multiple sound effects, audio cues and underscore throughout the show. It was more expensive than most apps, but because of its functionality, it was a worthwhile purchase. Multiple cues could be played simultaneously, and cross-fades could be set between cues that ran back to back. GO BUTTON was also very useful to organize and run all of the audio for our Dance Concert. The "Hits" feature was great for Improv Shows.  Here is their website, Go Button
