I'm looking for some energy-boosting warmup games to do with my high schoolers...particularly to do before runs of shows. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Improv warm-ups are a great way to warm-up. Everybody gets really hyped and are good to go. Here are a few that my kids love:

Bunny Bunny: In  a circle everybody hits their legs on a beat and says "zumba, zumba". Let this happen 4 times before anything else happens. Everyone keeps saying "zumba" on the beat while one person claps their fingers together twice to themselves (on beat) and twice to a different person in the circle while saying "bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny" on beat. The person who was sent the "bunny, bunny" claps their fingers twice to themselves and twice to someone else in the circle while saying "bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny" beat. While this is occurring the people on both sides of the "bunny, bunny" say "ticky-tocky-ticky-tocky" while facing the person saying "bunny-bunny" and moving their hands up and down while framing the face. While all of this happens everyone else in the circle is saying "zumba, zumba" and hitting their legs. Everyothing has to happen on a beat. When someone messes up they leave the circle and when the rest of the group restarts the tempo is faster. As people are eliminated they stay outside of the circle to help call out anyone who makes a mistake. This keeps them invested in the game. At the end you will have 2 people left standing.

Big Booty: Standing in a circle make one person Big Booty and number everyone else numerically. Hands stay on beat by clapping, slapping legs, clapping, slapping legs. While that is occurring everyone is chanting "Biiiiiiiiig Booty, uh huh, big booty, big booty, big booty. Big booty number ___" and chooses a number from the circle. That person says their number (i.e.  4) then chooses another number or big booty. This continues until there is a mistake. The person who made it goes to the end of the line and everyone shifts one number to reflect their new place in the circle. So... for example "Biiiiiiiiiig booty, uh huh. Big booty, big booty, big booty. Big booty number 7. Number 7 number 2, number 2 number6, number 6 big booty, ect). If big booty messes up then they become the last number in the circle and number 1 become big booty.

Kind of difficult to explain. Good luck. :)

"The Energy Ball" is my favorite quick way to build energy. I start by reaching into the center of the circle and grabbing a great big ball of energy, I explain that this "Ball of energy is so great that you can't hold on to it. As soon as you get it you have to pass it to the person next to you. When you pass it the energy goes through your entire body so you can't stand still and it comes out with a sound. The sound is unique to you and it's a sound not a word, a sound not a word, a sound not a word. (I say this three times because there is always someone who thinks it will be cute to say a popular phrase and that's not really the point of this.)" So each student should receive the energy from the person have it enter their body and transform into their own unique sound and pass it on to the next person. I always keep my feet moving and speak really quickly when explaining the instructions. I typically have them go around a few times and then I switch the direction going the other way around the circle. Hope that makes sense!
