How do we get people to donate to our virtual theatre production?

  • 1.  How do we get people to donate to our virtual theatre production?

I am currently working on a virtual performance of a one act musical with junior high students.
We are finding this a very exciting as well as a very challenging way to work.
We use Zoom to meet and rehearse. The technical differences in WiFi speeds, etc can be frustrating.
We will record the Zoom meetings for the different scenes, and then have students videotape and send their part of the musical numbers to be edited together.
Thank heavens I have 2 high school TV class students willing to help edit it all together.
Thank heavens Pioneer Drama is agreeable to this method, and our royalty fee for the musical now covers the video.

In the past, the students were able to sell tickets ($5) to the show as a way to help finish paying their Pay-to -Participate fee.
They are asking how we plan to do this with a recorded video of the show?
They also asked me "where" and "how" is the video to be released?

These are all excellent questions, and I have no idea what the answers are.
Do any of you have suggestions for either getting donations or how to proceed with releasing the video of our show?
Would there be a way to connect the two?

    Thanks,
    Valerie

We are doing a livestream of our production of Much Ado this weekend.  It sounds like yours is more an issue of releasing something after it has been edited.  So perhaps a YouTube Channel would be simplest?

Do you have an online ticketing program like Booktix?  We do, and so we just are doing online ticket sales for a week after the event (we opened it two days ago), so that people can buy a ticket.  They can also make additional donations to the program via that program if they want.

If anyone is interested in our livestream, it's at 7 PM CT on 5/1 and 5/2.  You can access it at https://www.munaud.org/Livestream

Raymond, thanks for sharing info about your livestream. I am hoping to watch with my cast of The Old Man and The Old Moon. We are currently working on our livestream for the end of May and would love to support other virtual performances during this time. Break virtual legs tonight!

MTI and SHOWTIX4U just announced a tool that looks promising to solve a lot of these problems.  I've posted a question in another stream hoping to find out a bit more about what's capable.  I know I need to make some $ as well as give the kids an opportunity to perform after losing all the spring fundraising performance.

Donations are definitely needed to make sure we have a season next year!  Check out AnywhereSeat, it is a ticketing program specific to online or virtual shows. They just went public and it works amazingly well, and is FREE. You should check it out. I am using it to replay our Shakespeare series to raise money for a possible Christmas show!

    Hey Valerie & Jen,
We're so happy to hear that theatre groups around the country are striving to share theatre with their communities! #theatrefindsaway
Today we at ShowTix4U announced, with our partners at Music Theatre International and Broadway Media, a new streaming platform
that allows you to live stream, schedule prerecorded content for "viewing parties," and have video on demand.
We hope this helps solve the problem of bringing theatre to your audiences, while allowing schools to generate lost revenue from cancelled productions. We're launching in the next six weeks. We think that our platform will answer all of your questions regarding tying donations, tickets, and your show together. Feel free to reach out me for more info.

Another company you can check out is On The Stage led by Tony-winning Broadway producer Hunter Arnold. They did several webinars this week about this very thing; they call it Play It Forward. They are connecting Zoom with a private YouTube link and their platform. If you want to sell tickets or get donations, you can. They are working with publishing companies as well, but people can go with other companies with which deals have already been made and paid (like yours). They suggest was to go with plays and readings because of the lag that happens with music, but they said doing things the way you want to do things is also possible. You can check out their program at https://landing.onthestage.com/play-it-forward

We are using our online ticketing service Booktix.com as they have a donation option through our online box office that was set up for our school. I do believe most ticketing services also have this option.

As someone previously mentioned... check out anywhereseat.com that is what we plan to use ... it was super easy to set up our page and there are a lot of different ways to charge or you can do it completely for free ... we are going to demo it next week to show our actors one of our most recent shows.

    #Valerie Farschman

    Valerie,

We are also planning a Zoom Show in early November if we are not on the stage by then able to stand next to each other without masks. I got permission from the author to do a Zoom to tape & then show a tape of it on a livestream with limited access like a Zoom. We are not able to put the tape out for others to view after our showing.  We are hoping to collect donations through Venmo & still sell Candy Grams, Flower Grams, Balloon Grams Ahead of time that we will deliver In teams on the day of the show. Please invite me to your show so I can take some notes. I might also want to pick your brain as it gets closer. Break a virtual leg!!

I think virtual performances may be the way to go until precautions have been established and we are able to open our theaters. Take a look at https://AnywhereSeat.com as They are a free and easy way to sell tickets to virtual performances. They were created by Ludus. You can also use Ludus to collect fees and other costs from your students if you go that route. Again, it is absolutely free to you, and your check can be sent directly to you or direct deposited. Their customer service is amazing and they can individualize things as you need them.  Reach out to Zack at Zack@ludus.com.
