  • 1.  masks with mics

    Hi,
    Despite moving out production of Heathers back as late in the Spring as possible, it looks like actors will have to be masked for performance.  We have body mics for all--the over ear type.  Any suggestions about what type of masks and configuration of mask and mic has worked best for those who have performed in similar conditions?  Any suggestions are much appreciated!

    Chad, we are working on our second production this year with masks and while it isn't ideal (and enunciation has never been more important) I do find that the paper masks often offer more clarity than cloth masks.  Best wishes for your performance!

    We used the disposable masks and they worked just fine.  I actually like that teenagers are forced to enunciate.  They have flesh tone color masks on Amazon and they are much less distracting than the medical blue.  We also had actors remove their mask if they were singing a solo and no others were around them.  People are just so excited to have live theatre they are forgiving when it comes to sound.

    Hi Chad, 
    Our Upper School just did a production of The Tempest. They used clear plastic masks with the white foam cushions on the top and bottom. Our director cover the white with medical tape so it wasn't as distracting. It worked well with our mics.

    Hi Chad!


    We are masked and miked for our production of Peter and the Starcatcher.  We are using regular cloth masks.  As long as the mic is not too close to the edge of the mask, it won't be a big deal. If it's too close, we have found that air comes through the narrow opening, and it creates a wind sound on the mic, like a scratching sound.

    We used masks and one thing is make sure the cloth is not touch the mike it creates too much noise.  Pull the mike out from face and curve it toward the mouth.  That's worked best for us and for choir.

    Hi,
    We've been fortunate to do four productions this year, all masked, socially-distanced, and outdoors.  We used cloth masks for all the shows.  For our most recent show, Godspell, we placed mics on foreheads and the sound was great.  On earlier shows, mics were placed just above the mask line.  You just need to be precise with the placement for that option.
