  • 1.  Macbeth DVD?

    Hi, all,

    Happy New Year!

I'm looking for a good DVD version of Macbeth to show to an incarcerated population before we begin working on the play to inspire them.  I can't find one that I like.  Any favorites of yours that I'm missing?

I love the Patrick Steward production from PBS.

I like the Ian McKellan/Judy Dench version.
I like the RSC Antony Sher/Harriet Walter version but there is some nudity (breasts and child) but the opening scene is amazing!
I like the Folger Theatre version with magic by Penn Gillete
And the Playboy film production has a lot going for it, too. I showed it to a prison class I was teaching and they loved it.

The RSC and Playboy version have voice-overs for the soliloquies which I really dislike.

The one I really like is the Kenneth Branagh version broadcast by NT Live. Info about the production itself is here. I do not know if there is a DVD version. It was staged in Manchester in a church with audience seating taken out of the middle and only on the sides. The floor was covered with mud. The first scene--a battle--is done so the audience is watching the "sport" very closely. Overall, a very physical production.

I taught Macbeth for a 10th grade English class (low level) for four years and the video that I liked best was the Folger edition directed by Teller (of Penn & Teller) and Aaron Posner.  It is action packed, filmed well and available on Amazon.

You might take a look at the 2016 Stratford Festival production. It was filmed live in front of an audience. A rather dark take on the material, but this is Macbeth after all, but lovely in its way. It can be accessed through Broadway HD or on DVD.
