  • 1.  3-5 day project

    Posted 01-28-2020 14:02
I'll be out for two days for ThesCon, and I would like my classes to have project to work on in the library (some of them do better in there while I'm gone). I'm looking for a project that I can go over with them the day before I leave, and something they can finish on their own. I have a few I've used before, such as great American playwrights, but they haven't been the most interesting for the students. Any suggestions? They would have access to computers and some basic art supplies. This would be for my Drama I classes.

How about costume and/or makeup morgues? Assign time periods, types of clothing (adults, children, formal wear, etc) and makeup types (animals, Broadway shows, wounds, aliens, etc) and have them find a set number of images for each. They can arrange them in Google slides with appropriate labels, and so on.

A couple of suggestions.... I have my students do a set design project that starts with following a one point perspective tutorial which is a room. Once they complete the first drawing they choose a genre, a time period, an artist , and then do visual reasearch collecting ten pictures in a Google doc.  Once they have the visual research they redraw the room using the visual research to inform their design. I have the assignment which I can share if you are interested. I also have a similar assignment for costume design in which they take a character they know and change the time period.  I also have this assignment if you are interested.

Here are  the materials for the set  design and costume design lessons.

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZbwrYbYk2hoWvcWUaThX7owl7Jf-eaGV/edit-  proficincey scale for assignments

I use the character sketch from the Drama Projects book. It hits all of the information. There is also a body with that one or the students can draw their own. The last part of the assignment is to create the design in newspaper on a model.  They also critique each other's work and do a reflection piece.

I can send those if there is an interest. Let me know if the links work. If not I will try it another way.

There is a great hip hop lesson on Theatre Educator Pro that I just put up, designed for students to do on their own.  It requires access to computers and a free sound ap.  it would work really well for self directed leaning.
    Check it out here: https://learn.schooltheatre.org/hip-hop-how-to
