Hey everyone! I'm moving into a theatre history unit with my advanced high school students. They are doing the teaching in this unit and are assigned specific historical eras/genres of theatre to research and share with the class. I'd like to include early African theatre traditions/dramatic rituals in the project, but am looking for resources that I can send the students to for their research-- especially as it relates to styles of performance. Do you have any recommended sources or sites (beyond a simple google search)? Any ideas are welcomed!!

I had students research African dance theatre and African ritual drama last year and they were frustrated by the limited information they were finding. So, I had them play with their search terms. Eventually, they came up with enough information for a good 45 minute lesson. My recommendation would be the same: play with various search terms to see what kind of hits you get. Many of them will be links to books on the subject, or current research projects.

Go to your school's library and talk to the media specialist. Ask them to put together a class set of resources specially set aside for your students. Chances are your school also pays for peer reviewed journals and databases. Your media specialist could walk your students through it in the library or you could invite them to your classroom. Usually the media specialist is really happy to prove to the kids there is a bigger world than Wikipedia! The kids can also request special books through inter library loan.
