I'm looking for a good quality play for our fall production which is a vehicle for a strong female lead- could be comedy or drama. No musicals.  Suggestions?

    Depending on cast size...

    Pride and Prejudice
    Emma
(there are lots of options for these 2)
Lizzy Borden of Fall River (Pioneer Drama)
    Lady Dracula (Pioneer Drama)
Alice in Wonderland (again, lots of versions)
Beauty and the Beast (we loved the Timothy mason version from Playscripts - it's not a musical)
    Diary of Anne Frank

For dramas, Silent Sky, These Shining Lives or Miracle Worker. The casts are all on the small side - 5-10, I think, though These Shining Lives has some flexibility.

I direct plays at an all-girls school, and it can be tough to find plays with fabulous female leads! Here are some shows I've directed that are challenging for the actors and engaging for the audience:
Wait Until Dark - lead female is blind, drama
Crimes of the Heart - three sisters are the leads, southern gothic comedy/drama
Steel Magnolias - six women, no men, southern comedy/drama
Blithe Spirit - hilarious Noel Coward play, several lead female roles

Decision Height by Meredith Dayna Levy (Samuel French) is a wonderful play with an all-female cast. It's about women in the Air Force during World War II.

Kindertransport by Diane Samuels has exceptional female parts but it requires a smaller cast 5 females (but incredible roles for all 5) and 1 male (which probably could be flexible) from what I remember...

    Cheers!
