  • 1.  essays, articles, books chapters - Contemporary US Theater

I'm teaching a 5-week seminar class for high school seniors in Contemporary US Theater. I think we'll read one play each week, with the focus on plays that deal with contemporary issues through the lense of the family. Plays include: Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar, Water by the Spoonful by Quiara Alegría Hudes, Appropriate by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Immediate Family by Paul Oakley Stovall, and Cost of Living by Martyna Majok.

I would love to include some dramatic criticism in here that challenges them but isn't written in overly academic language. I'd love any ideas! (With links if you have them!) Essays, articles, books chapters, etc.

Also, can you think of other plays I could suggest as independent reading? Thank you!!

Someone recommended to me the following book with essays that might be good for this class: 100 essays I don't have time to write : on umbrellas and sword fights, parades and dogs, fire alarms, children, and theater / Sarah Ruhl
