  • 1.  80's themed short play suggestions

    Posted 11-01-2013 10:41

Each spring our troupe presents a showcase under a common theme. This year's theme is We Love The 80's.  I can come up with plenty of music, TV & movie ideas, but I prefer to find some quality short plays which we could perform.  In my most recent search I have found one short play which might work. We prefer comedy and we need casts somewhere between 5 and 15.  Any suggestions? Even ideas of plays in which we could fake the setting to the 80's.  Thanks.

    Karen,
Voices from the High School was a popular ensemble show in the 1980's!  I bet you could find some good material from there.  Not sure who carries it anymore, though.  Also, Bridal Terrorism is a one-act you might be able to pull some scenes from.

If I think of any others, I will pass them along to you!  Hope your year is going well!!

    Karen,
This may be a bit more than you asked for, but I immediately thought of The Awesome 80's Prom.  It's not a short piece, but its gloriously, stereotypically 80's!  The fun part of this is that it can be interactive for the audience (who, just by attending this show, think the 80's were a tubular time).  Script and licensing info: http://www.samuelfrench.com/p/2772/awesome-80s-prom-the

Best wishes with this awesome idea!

I was involved with a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream that was trimmed to about an hour and set in the 1980s in Central Park.  Because it was a shortened version it seemed less intimidating for the students - and director - and there are lots of fun ways to dress/distinguish the Athenians from Oberon's posse and Titania's crew.  [Our Oberon looked like Billy Idol while Hermia resembled Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club.]  If your cast is limited to 15 you could cut the number of Titania's fairies, or Theseus and Hippolyta.

Last year, my troupe did Promedy, by Wade Bradford. It's slightly anachronistic, as it has cell phones in it, but the energy, music (especially the dance number to "Take on Me" at the end), and plot line is very '80s. It was a lot of fun for my students, and myself! I even added some fun little touches, like an opening vignette set to the Outfield's "Your Love".
