  • 1.  Need Song for Ballet/Hip Hop Combo

    We are looking for music to choreograph a dance to that combines, mixes, mashes-up, any option really, of ballet and hip-hop.  The idea is there is a female ballet dancer and a male hip-hop dancer who meet.  Any suggestions?

    This might seem like an "out there" suggestion, but my recommendation is to email your question to Charlie Harding and Nate Sloan of the podcast Switched on Pop. Their knowledge of all things music and the unique way they approach all the technical "musicy" stuff about both modern and classical music makes me believe they would come up with some truly awesome suggestions for you....     There are some amazing tracks by DJ Shadow and U.N.K.L.E.

    Beat heavy, hip-hop-ish, with some classic orchestral flourishes thrown in for good measure. 

    Try 'Stem/Long Stem', 'High Noon,' 'Organ Donor,''Building Steam with a Grain of Salt' by DJ Shadow

    Try 'Bloodstain' (very similar to 'Stem'), 'Intro/Guns Blazing' and 'Rabbit in your Headlights' by UNKLE. 

    All more to the dark side of popular music, but they work for me. :)

    I've been using Heart Upon My Sleeve by Avicii for one of our movement exercises recently. It's a great song and I think it could be fun for the ballet/hip-hop combination idea you presented. Good luck!
