Hello friends of the arts. We are potentially looking at producing "You Can't Take It With You" and am interested how you came up with your set design. Any thoughts, words of wisdom or photos would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, Crit,

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but here's a post from my blog on how sets are designed:

And a concept I wish I had learned in school much earlier myself:

We have done a pretty simple set design for this show in the past. The magic is all in the set dressing.

Attached is my design. We don't have space for two stories, so I built four steps and a small landing for the xylophone. To the left of the landing are steps the actors used to enter/exit from the "second floor". Used 10' tall wall panels. Actors entered/exit the house to the right of the steps.

Basement door on the left and kitchen (swinging) door on the right. Directors wanted stained (not painted) wood trim, so that was expensive. Having all the oddities on the walls really helps.

Here are some photos of my designs for our production of this play.  We did two sets of steps, several doors, and a half-height wall and door to the exterior on stage left.

Here are a few pics from our production a few years back. First one is under work light before starting show.  Basement door USC. With the 3 step landing in front of it, it gave the impression they were coming "up" from the basement.
