Awele -
Thanks for asking!
1.) There is considerable alignment, but these courses are far more in-depth than the National Core Arts Standards when it comes to the technical elements of a show. This is a "Train the Trainer" type of class. We're going to give you the knowledge AND how to teach it to your students.
Wisconsin is one of the few (only?) states that has equal standards for theater performance and theater production. That was part of why we developed these classes.
Theater teachers are typically well prepared to manage the performance side of teaching theater with classes in directing, casting, movement, voice, etc. But, they are often woefully lacking on the production side for things like audio, lighting, properties, rigging, wardrobe, hair/makeup, scenic construction, special effects, etc. and how to design for each of those areas, much less how to teach them and how to manage things according to the current ANSI professional standards for theater.
2) You will need a laptop or desktop computer to take the class - either MAC or PC is fine - but you don't need to be sitting at your school's light board to do those activities, for example. The class is flexible so that if you have a performance space where you normally work, your assignments will focus on the attributes of that space, but if you don't, we have a sample space you can use instead. I say space because theater in schools varies from courtyards and multi-purpose rooms to gymnatoriums and full-blown PACs.
The ultimate goal is that the participants are confident users of what they have and can teach the same to their students. We've got a great mix of folks, so far. Please join us and bring a friend!

Kristi!
This sounds awesome!
1
Does the course also align the National Core Arts Standards to the curriculum?
2
Do I need to be sitting with/in front of tech equipment to complete the lessons or do the work?

Hi Awele!
Your timing is perfect! I'm an IATSE (the stagehand's union) trainer, "retired" K-12 teacher and have been workin on this series of classes for a long time! We've made the classes flexible as far as number of credits, whether you chose grad or undergrad level, and the schedule is asynchronous so you can flex a full-time teaching career (and life!) around being a student. I'd love to have you in class!
University of Wisconsin - Madison: Department of Theater will be offering two online classes specifically designed for the needs of theater, music, and dance teachers:
Undergrad #219, Graduate #619
Audio for Performing Arts Teachers
Lighting for Performing Arts Teachers
Available for 1, 2 or 3 credits.
Search for "Summer 2021" and "Theater" then scroll down for the course number. You'll need to register as a "UNDS" Special Student if you're not otherwise registered and can apply here for free: Application
PLUS get a third course for free! Sign up for both the audio and lighting courses at the 3 credit level and you can take #219, "Hamilton: a Cultural Revolution" since 9 credits are the same cost as 6!
The two tech classes are 100% online, asynchronously offered, with flexibility because you deserve a summer, too!
Share with anyone you think would enjoy the class. Advanced HS students, parents who help with HS shows, administrators who use the space, school board members who want to learn more about technical theater - all are welcome!
