  • 1.  Moving to New School To-Do List

    Hi Friends-

I'm moving to a new school this fall.  What would be your summer "to-do list" items for taking over an existing program?

For context: The school typically does 2 mainstage shows per year plus one student directed piece and has a booster program.  It has an auditorium and shop space.

I've been teaching for about 10 years and have changed schools before, but would love for the hive mind to offer any  advice to help me prioritize and make a smooth transition.

    Thanks!

Find allies (most dedicated students, supportive teachers, parents, admin, etc.).
Take inventory (props, costumes, flats, paint, etc.).
I'd want to know the past ten seasons of productions so I wouldn't repeat any titles too soon.
What have been the biggest successes in the program in the past few years?
What are the biggest challenges (sharing space, calendar issues, student conduct, etc.).
    Best wishes!

Lots of advice about this in "Real-World Theatre Education"

Especially your seniors are likely to have a rough time shifting loyalties or changing any traditions they're used to.  Go in early to set up and meet the stakeholders. Take care of yourself.  Best of luck. Enjoy this new adventure!
