fjg5XAJYSW6guddKvyIE_Loft Photo #1.jpgOur schools/cities Fire Marshall has demanded for our Theatre room to be torn down. We previously built wooden lofts for all of our set and prop materials. This has upheld for the past 5 years, but today was told we have to remove it all immediately. I am in need of help as too find a replacement (Huge metal warehouse fire compliant shelving) or a loop hole.

Any guidance is welcomed and appreciated.

    What is the reasoning/infraction?

Sprinklers can't reach? Too close to the ceiling? Not enough clearance from entry/exit? Combination? Etc.

What if you were to replace with metal instead of wood?

We are not near the sprinklers, nor the chilling. We are within code and parameters for those aspect, but the only exception is that it is made of wood which is considered combustable. So we are going to have to strike this week, and I need to replace. Metal is the only option I can think of as well, but am looking to see if anyone has any ideas as warehouse industrial shelves or a company that might be able to help us out with out costing us an arm and a leg.

If Metal is your option, you could possibly, if you have a shop class for metals, have them build you something, this might be more economical than shelving. If not Sams club, cosco, your local...Lowe's, Home Depot, Menard's might be an option.

I understand that the shelves are made of wood, the question is if you put wood items on the metal shelving will the Fire Marshall still consider this an infraction?

Have you tried an internet search for "used pallet racking NC"? There many companies that sell used steel shelving. Used might not be as expensive as you fear. Good luck.

What if you covered the wood with latex painting with fireproofing agent like Roscoflamex in it?

I am inquiring about this as we speak. This is my first problem solving tactics, along with building codes of Load requirements, handrails, steps, and ladders. Thank you for the name brand and suggestion!

Here are 2 sources on Craig's List

The first is free (Salisbury), but very industrial

And this (in SouthPark) is more like 2 heavy duty baker's racks for $50

One more! There's an app called LetGo that I think of as a cheap eBay for big/bulky items that are too $$ to ship and need local pick up.

On the app I found these sweet shelves that don't have a corresponding sweet price. If you're interested, LMK and I'll ask the seller for contact info; or just download the app. I'll attach/upload 2 screen shots to this post; can't link to them.

I found some heavy duty shelving units with wire shelves at Menards (less than $150 each) I redid my entire prop room.
I was concerned about weight and wood shelves bowing..so the wire worked great.. I would buy them again if I was doing it all over again..
I would think any home improvement store would . have something like these.
