  • 1.  Calling all Georgia Theatre teachers

Ok, I am trying to help out one of my alumni students.  He is finishing up his bachelor's degree in Theatre Performance this spring. Now he wants to teach. Georgia's certification requirements are quite strange for theatre teachers because theatre is actually not a field that is available for certification opportunity (there is no GACE (Georgia's teaching certification test) offered in the field, nor a Master's graduate program in our area). I have taught theatre as an elective for several years and also direct all of our shows and competitions, but I am certified in other fields, because I was an English teacher, now media specialist.  So those of you from Georgia, is your certification the same as mine? Certified in other areas? Also, do you know of any institutions in Georgia that offer a Theatre Education program as a master's program online that would allow for teaching certification?

    Thank you!

There is a certificate for Drama (P-12). I was certified in a different state, which was transferred over, so I don't know the hoops that he would have jump through here. I don't know if this will help but here's a link find programs that can lead to certification:

Columbus State University is the only college in GA that offers a Theatre Education certification.  I have an MFA in Acting but had to do their post-bacc program to complete credits for my certification.  There are alternative routes through GaTAPP and RESA but I believe you have to be hired first and recommended by an employer.  He can check these facts because there may be other ways but CSU has an awesome education leader in the theatre department.  Her name Brenda Ito.  She can answer more clearly I'm sure.

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission oversees all teacher certification in the state. That would be the place to go to confirm anything: https://www.gapsc.com/

Georgia certification *does* have a Drama category for K-12. It is usually reserved for Education majors with enough theatre hours to be considered highly qualified. It also shows up on a provisional certificates for the Theatre graduates who do not have the teaching certificate.  I was an English teacher first with a theatre background. My 6-12 English certification covers Drama in the state of GA.  Hope this helps.
