What are your MUST HAVE resources (books, scripts, etc) for your classroom?

  • 1.  What are your MUST HAVE resources (books, scripts, etc) for your classroom?

    Hello everyone!~

I'm in my first year teaching in an international school.  Though a few Middle School drama classes existed before I was hired, I am essentially building the program.  This also means that I am building resources and a library.  Orders for next year are due in a week.  I've made a list of books, plays, resources that I'd love to have but I'm sure I'm missing some absolutely awesome things.

What are YOUR must have resources (books, plays, etc) for your Middle School drama classroom?   What are your favourite things?  What would you suggest I include on my dream list?

(I teach a little bit of everything: pantomime, improvisation, storytelling, creative drama, TYA, theatre for social change, devising, script / scene work, playwriting, puppetry, design, etc.)

    Thank you so much!~

I teach in Dallas and as a side hobby I publish Theatre classroom posters. The biography theatre classroom posters I make go along with the International School Curriculum. I have Uta Hagen, Stanislavski, & Hansberry at the moment. Posters for Strasberg, Meisner, Spolin, & Henson will be available next month. You can message me for more info if you want.

Although I teach high school, here are some things that I use regularly:

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare

A large number of Don Zolidis scripts (they're great for classwork as well as performance)

DVDs of performances at the Globe Theatre and other professional productions

The Best of the Tony's (straight and musicals) DVDs

The Ultimate Scene Study Series for Teens

Actor's Choice Monologues (both men and women)

Scripts based on on history or literature (I like them b/c it gives the kids a lot of rich research options)

Stock costumes and props for use in classwork

A variety of theatrical posters and programs from shows I've either seen or performed in to decorate the walls

Technique books (an eclectic variety so there is something for both the actors and the techniques to use as reference material)

    A script library (in general)

     - I frequently will buy a few copies of a script for perusal and use in the classroom. Over time I have been able to build my script library up to over 200 scripts. Although this takes time it's a really great resource for the kids to use when they are looking for scenes or monologues... and they'll frequently stop by my classroom to grab something to read on standardized test days.

It's important to remember that you can do a lot with a little. Build up your libraries and stock materials over time. You'll end up with everything you need faster than you realize. :)

Matt Ludlum's posters are wonderful resources. I have most of them and I'm interested in the upcoming Meisner and others he spoke of in his post.

A great resource I love are Jessica Swale's Drama Games books ('Drama Games for Devising' and 'Drama Games for Classroom and Workshops'). Really really really helpful quick dip resources or they can be used for structuring a more prolonged series of lessons, but all very useful for building cohesion and ensemble.

Shira's is a great starting list. It takes time to build your resources, so work out what you absolutely essentially need right now, get that, and add as you go along.

Improvisations for the Theatre by Viola Spolin is my Bible. But I'm old school and I think this book is probably out of print.  However, find a copy if you can. In fact, I haven't read all of the responses here but I'm willing to bet someone else has already mentioned it. Or better yet, you already have it.

One of my all-time favorite books on theatre is Robert Edmond Jones' The Dramatic Imaginaton, which is available through amazon.com. Jones was a top-notch NY set designer in the first half of the 20th century and inspired or mentored several other top designers.

It's not strictly on "how to design a set" and has nothing on construction, but it's a wonderful read and a breath of fresh air. Best of all, it's a short book and can be read in an afternoon or evening, although most of us keep going back to it over and over.

You can get a brief take on Jones at Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Edmond_Jones

I thought someone might have mentioned it already, but since they haven't, Gai Jones' 'Raising the Curtain' is a wonderful resource.

I also really like 'Technical Theatre for Non-technical people'. Written with quite a bit a snark and wit, it's a great intro text if students are wanting to explore the tech areas of theatre.

Got this off a website but I own nearly all of them and swear by them.

    1. Acting in Person and In Style Australia by Carol Wimmer – I use this book a lot when I am teaching monologues, duologues, acting skills (voice workshops). It is also brilliant for teaching a range of performance styles. THERE IS THE ONE PRIOR TO THE '''AUSTRALIA''' VERSION BUT I KNEW CAROL AND HER WORK SO I LOVE IT

    2. Dramawise by Brad Haseman – The bible full of exercises for explicitly teaching the elements of drama. I highly recommend this book as a starting point for beginning teachers. REALLY GOOD RESOURCE TO HAVE WHEN ADVOCATING FOR YOUR PROGRAM, TOO

    3. You’re On by Rob Galbraith – Another fantastic text with exercises to teach students about performance elements as well as the roles of people behind the scenes.

    4. Living Drama by Bruce Burton – This is actually part of a three part series (Making Drama and Creating Drama are his titles for lower secondary drama students) and is best used with senior students. It looks at aspects of drama in a slightly more sophisticated way which is applicable to senior students and their essays. LOVE THIS WHOLE SERIES: CREATING, MAKING, AND LIVING DRAMA; USE THEM FOR VARIOUS AGE GROUPS, BUT USUALLY 7 THROUGH 10

    5. Navigating Drama by Richard Baines and Mike O’Brien – A great text for students in Year 9-10 Drama. Some of the particularly helpful sections include the playbuiding chapter and the commedia dell arte chapter. USE THIS A LOT

    6. Navigating Senior Drama by Richard Baines and Mike O’Brien – I like this senior text because of its focus on the NSW Drama Syllabus. It has focus chapters on Australian Drama and Theatre which forms part of the theory component of the course as well as a section specifically devoted to some of the Studies in Drama and Theatre topics (Brecht, Greek Theatre and American Drama). It also has good chapters on the Group and Individual Performance units. THIS IS GEARED TOWARD HSC STUDENTS IN AUSTRALIA, BUT YOU CAN ADAPT THEM TO NEARLY EVERYTHING

    7. Centre Stage by Matthew Clausen –  Great teaching suggestions plus some really great templates for teaching the elements of production including costume design and lighting and sound plotting. MAT IS A TEACHER AND MARKER AND HE HAS WRITTEN A REAL 'HANDS ON' BOOK HERE

    8. Lighting and Sound by Neil Fraser – everything you need to know about lighting and sound in a simple easy to understand way. Absolute gold.

    9. Stage Design and Props by Michael Holt – As above. An absolute gem of a book if you want to learn about set design and making.

    10. Costume and Make-Up by Michael Holt Ditto as above.

Oh, and if I haven’t mentioned it before Improvisation: A Guide by Lyn Pierse. Absolutely excellent for anything Theatre Sports or improvisation related. Oh, oh, oh and if you’re teaching Publicity and Program Design try Stage Management and Theatre Administration by Pauline Menear and Terry Hawkins.

Most of these can be purchased on Amazon.
