scene for two female advanced acting students

I have two 10th grade girls who were in my Acting I class last year and who I'm working with one-on-one in an Acting II independent study this year. They performed as Antigone and Esme in AntigoneX by Paula Cizmar last year.

I need some scenes for them to perform in our Acting showcase! Something that will really stretch them. Two scenes - comedy and dramatic. One is Latina, with little acting experience but a big heart. The other is African American, with dreams of becoming a film star.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions! These do not have to be ethnically specific ... I'm open to intentional color conscious casting.

    Thanks millions!

It's been a long time since I've worked with the play, but look at one called "Snow Leopards" by Martin Jones. Samuel French has it.

There are some excellent choices in "Agnes of God" for the dramatic piece.

There is a great 2-woman show called Matt & Ben (I can't remember who wrote it) that is about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck writing Good Will Hunting. I'd also concur that Agnes of God has good scenes as does Major Barbara or Saint Joan.

Dry Land, Ruby Rae Spiegel, Dramatist Play Service. Two girls on the swim team in high school. Quite raw. Tons of good female/female scenes, intense subject matter (one of the characters is asking the other character to repeatedly punch her in the stomach to help her abort an unwanted pregnancy). Funny/dramatic/dark

Mindy Kaling wrote and starred in "Matt and Ben" in her pre-tv star days.

Dry Land would potentially be both comedy and dramatic. One that would fit in the 'dramatic' is another play, the opening scene of 'Silent Sky.' Two sisters, one deaf (so having to research how deaf people speak), turn of the century 1900s Wisconsin. Strong depth and strong objectives/needs for both characters. Lauren Gunderson, Dramatists Play Service. Two former students of mine used this to good effect in their IE piece and scored highly with it.

Sorry, got one more I just remembered!

'How to Make Friends and Then Kill Them', Halley Fieffer. Very dark, jet-black humor with lots of drama. There's a couple of scenes between two of the three female roles. Probably the hardest one of the three to 'sell', but I've seen it done well by high schoolers. Two girls make friends with a third girl with physical problems, and it follows their lives over a period of years. Does not end well, as you may be able to tell from the title. Also Dramatists Play Service.

    Have fun!

I'm a sucker for Deborah Pryor's The Love Talker. Absolutely fantastic scenes for young female actors. Advance warning: It is an extremely strange script about malicious spirits in the wilderness, but if you can get past the Appalachian dialect, it's one of the more bone-chilling plays out there.

    Ruby Rae Spiegel seconded.

I have three 10-minute piece you might want to look at. (attached here) Just let me know if you use any of them so I can add it to my resume.

I'd also look into Graceland (you could do a cutting from it) or Sunday, Sunday.

I agree with Agnes of God, and Graceland!

Also consider, Hidden In this Picture, though originally written for men, there are some scenes where gender isn't an issue.  I've never read it, but saw a great IE scene by two females at ITF years ago.

If you want to go classic, Juliet and the Nurse from Romeo and Juliet.  Hermia and Helena from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

    Best of wishes!
