  • 1.  Best Sherlock play?

    Hi everyone...first-time poster here.

I'm looking to use my high school students' interest in the BBC Sherlock series and produce a Sherlock Holmes play, but there's SO MANY out there.

Have any of you come across a Sherlock play with good character development and unpredictable thrills?

    Thanks in advance!

We did both Sherlock Holmes and the West End Horror by Anthony Dodge and Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily by Katie Forgette. Both were good scripts that the cast and audience enjoyed. The West End Horror is more of a horror mystery (with quite a bit of humor mixed in) and the Jersey Lily is more light hearted. Both were easy to produce and can be found on Playscripts.

I am also a huge BBC Sherlock Holmes fan and several years back I decided I had to director a Sherlock Holmes play.

I read virtually all of the scripts I could find.  Some were really well written with great characters, but not enough for what I needed, and too many male leads.  Others were awful.  Too childish or too insipid.  I was about to give up.

I needed a large cast, I wanted to feature female as well as male actors, I wanted the quintessential Sherlock moments, and I really wanted Moriarty as the villain.

I have never been a fan of Tim Kelly's work because I often find it too juvenile for my tastes, but I have to say that his version of Sherlock Holmes took the cake.

It is available from Pioneer Drama.

My current students talk about it as being one of the most favorite productions they ever saw us produce.  The characters were great, there is humor and adventure, intrigue and mishaps.  We made it one of my most favorite productions I have directed in my 25 years of experience.

    Good luck on your search

So glad to have read your response here! I'm seeking a Sherlock one-act, and really like the Tim Kelly version, but of course, it's not a one-act. Do you think I could cut down this version to a one act (35 minutes)? Or do you know of one out there?

Thank you so much for your response here!

I love Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, by Ken Ludwig. Supposed to be performed by 5 actors, which adds to the fun.
