  • 1.  Where do you get your swords?

    Posted 01-05-2017 09:55

There are several suppliers that I've found of stage-ready swords at a wide range of prices (sort of expensive to "we will never have that kind of money" expensive).  Do you have a favorite source for swords that can stand up to classroom life (I teach a combat unit, currently with 1/2 inch dowels standing in for rapiers) and fit a variety of time periods for production?  How much did you pay?

    Peace,

We used trainers (recommended by our fight director) from Cold Steel for our production of "She Kills Monsters" (highly recommend the play):

I rent mine from Preferred Arms.  They are about 10-20/week, depending on what you need, and they will do discounts.  Those of course are for productions.  I use wooden swords for rehearsals and classwork--I can't remember where I purchased them from, but they were about $10 and lasted pretty well.

We used Rogue Steel in Illinois. Neil Massey, the owner, is an amazing guy and his weapons are great. If you're looking to purchase swords, their Single Swords are a great quality and only about $80 each.

Have to second the Rogue Steel recommendation. Beautiful swords, great weight, and totally look the part. You can pick up a single sword/epee style at a starting price of about $70/80, and can add custom features like style of handle/grip type. Was fortunate enough to have enough money to purchase a couple of broadswords, but they were more expensive ($300) but again, the craftsmanship and the quality of the work is excellent.

Neil is great, very helpful, and builds the swords himself, so if you have a large order be aware that it could take a few weeks. I am extremely happy with our rapier/single/epee style swords, our broadswords and our daggers. He was able to work with me and get my daggers to me quicker than was reasonable of me to expect, so do him a favor and order in advance. You won't be disappointed.

On a side note, don't order from the website on a school computer. I got a friendly email asking why I had been looking to purchase weapons on a school computer!! Only in theatre teacher land...

I've been renting and purchasing from Weapons of Choice Theatrical in California for decades. My most recent purchase was a rapier for my son, who was performing in The Three Musketeers. He was delighted with his birthday present and the envy of his cast mates.

I have used them for production rentals as well as for a summer course I created and taught in our school system for about 10 years. They are very aware of SAFD safety standards, theatrical looks, and practical weaponry. They also have a variety of stage guns available.

Thanks to all who've replied so far!

Phillip: I know what you mean about school computers - some of the sites don't load here thanks to our filters on weapons!

Robert: I've heard good things about Weapons of Choice.  Their prices are fantastic.  Nice to hear that you've had a positive experience with them.

All: What's your feeling about hilts?  A simple bell is most affordable, but I'm thinking that some knuckle protection is a good idea (like a Captain Morgan or swashbuckler).  Preferences?

    Best!
