  • 1.  CTE Theatre Performance

    Hello, theatre friends.

I need to connect with someone who currently works with a CTE Theatre Performance program.

This program exists inside the State of Ohio career education structure and I need some insight into how it works.

I am somewhat familiar with the Technical Theatre and Design track so I need insight into Theatre Performance CTE.

I would love to start a discussion with an experienced theatre collegue.

    Anyone out there? Please help!

I, too, am interested in following this discussion. The idea has been brought up in my district, but to my knowledge has not progressed any further.

I'm curious - what is a "CTE Performance program"?  Usually acting and directing is the "Performance" part of a theatre program, and technical theatre is the "CTE" (and actually - "STEM") part of a theatre program.  Of course they are part and parcel, but I'm just curious as to how the State (read: non-theatre people who make the decisions for us) is perceiving our craft?  Thanks for any insight.

    Hi,

I am not going to claim to be an expert on the subject but I do work in CTE program for Technical Theatre.  I have also worked for CTE under Fashion, so the "how to's" I might be able to answer.  I'm not sure what information exactly you're seeking but I'll be happy to answer whatever I can.

Here are Theatre Performance courses in the Ohio CTE guidelines for a performing arts pathway.

    Performing Arts Primer

    Subject Code: 340210

In this first course for the Performing Arts pathway, students examine how music, dance and theatre disciplines connect to create a production. They compare and contrast different genre, social contexts and cultural aspects of dance, music and theatre from early Greek to present day. They learn the role of stagecraft, including new and emerging technology.

    Acting and Script Analysis

    Subject Code: 340225

This course combines understanding of the relationship between actor and script. Students research major theatre genres and influences, breaking down a script to discover objectives, obstacles, tactics and character development.  They create a script with scenes, plot points and characters. They learn acting techniques, including imagery, personal associations and inner monologue. They perform a role within an original or established piece of work.

    Acting Performance

    Subject Code: 340230

Meeting expectations of the casting director and audience is critical to any successful performer. This course focuses on maximizing an actor's physical and emotional expression, vocal intonation, memorization and imagination to convey stories and feelings. Whether spoken or sung, stylistic identity is reinforced. Other topics include material selection, developing a score of action for a role, sustaining a character and self and peer critique.

    Musical Theatre

    Subject Code:340245

The troupe member with abilities in music, dance and acting has "triple threat" value in musical theatre.  In this course, students assume the roles of singer, instrumentalist, actor and dancer as well as director, stage manager, set designer and/or costume technician.  Students learn to take and give orders to accomplish tasks. They analyze historical and current-day exemplary models of musical theatre for story line, musical arrangement and audience appeal.

There are also pathways/courses for Dance, Music, and Visual Art.

My question is, what industry recognized certification tests are they taking. I know technical theatre could line up with some OSHA certifications, but according to Ohio's Dept. of Ed. Website those two tests (10 hour and 30 hour course tests) only give students one point each to the total they have to earn to get a CTE designation upon graduation, and then what are the performing and non-technical students doing as their industry certifications. I'm in Florida and my principal and I have been trying for years to find enough industry certifications that when put together would equal a CTE program in theatre, be it technical, performance, or both combined, and we keep coming up short. How is Ohio getting the CTE designation without industry certifications in theatre? Is it just Ohio created exams and in that case doesn't qualify the programs for CTE funding given out at the national level? This has been our challenge. We want to have a CTE program in performing arts, but there isn't additional funding offered to support one, because there aren't industry certifications. I have been digging around on this for almost 8 years and still haven't figured out how some states are doing it, unless they are just creating their own tests and aren't using these programs for the additional funding source, the way other programs (like digital design, culinary, fashion, engineering, early childcare,...) are able to. I'd be curious to hear more if you have more information to share about funding especially.

You are so much more informed then me.  I so far find the entire thing so completely overwhelming.

We have been told that we need a plan by October for implementation in the fall of 2019.

The goal is to somehow maintain our audition-only, magnet arts program while also implementing a CTE program that would be open to anyone in the district. Our district is rolling out a career and college academy format for all 6 high schools.

There has been no discussion of Federal money available to CTE programs. State money is part of the equation.
